Zidane given ban and fine by Fifa

Zidane put his side of the story to Fifa on Thursday
Zinedine Zidane has been banned for three games and fined £3,260 for head-butting Italy's Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final.
Materazzi was banned for two matches and fined £2,170 for his part in the incident which occurred in extra-time before Italy's penalty victory.

France's Zidane said he head-butted the defender because he insulted his family, an allegation Materazzi denies.

Zidane's ban is meaningless as he retired from football after the finals.

Maybe if he is seen playing kickabout in his garden with his son they will arrest him for flouting the ban :P :P

Zidane given ban and fine by Fifa

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/footbal ... 198796.stm

Zidane put his side of the story to Fifa on Thursday
Zinedine Zidane has been banned for three games and fined £3,260 for head-butting Italy's Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final.
Following an investigation by world governing body Fifa, Materazzi was suspended for two games and fined £2,170 for provoking Zidane.

A Fifa statement said: "Both players stressed Materazzi's comments had been defamatory but not of a racist nature."

Zidane's ban is academic as he retired from football after the finals.

However the 34-year-old will instead work with football's world governing body Fifa for three days.

Fifa added: "Zinedine Zidane has agreed to do community service work with children and youngsters.

"During the course of their hearings both players also apologised to Fifa for their inappropriate behaviour and expressed their regret at the incident."

Playing in the last game of his career, Zidane snapped during extra time of the World Cup final.

The Frenchman later claimed Materazzi had insulted his mother and his sister.

However, Materazzi maintained his comments were not "racist, religious, or political" and he added: "I also said nothing about his mother."

Despite the incident, Zidane went on to win the Golden Ball for the tournament's best player and despite suggestions to the contrary, Fifa has confirmed the Frenchman will be allowed to keep the award.

"It wasn't even discussed at the meeting," said Fifa spokesman Andreas Herren.

Good measured response from FIFA. I like the idea of Zizou repaying his part in the fracas by giving community service.

Now we can finally give this incident the closure it deserves.

I DON NOT THINK THAT MARCO HAS BEEN TREATED FAIRLY ACCORDING TO THE RULES OF THE GAME. WITH THIS KIND OF PRECEDENCE, WILL IT BE OK FOR SOMEONE TO ATTEMPT TO EJECT ANOTHER PLAYER BY GOING TO THE REF AND ACCUSING THE PLAYER OF USING CURSE WORDS AT HIM?
PLAYERS USE LOTS OF FOUL LANGUAGE AGAINST EACH OTHER. PHISICAL VIOLENCE IS WHAT WE ARE ALL UP AGAINST. PLEASE MARC, GO AND APEAL THIS DECISION. WE ARE BEHIM YOU AND JUSTICE IN FOOTBALL

I don't think Fifa had any jurisdiction to investigate those. The Police and perhaps FA could have done something about that. In this case however both players admitted wrong doing and have been dealt with.

The ban would take effect, if he becomes a coach at any level.

This is just pure garbage. I guess FIFA will be asking players to start bringing their mama's to field to breast feed them when they cannot take it anymore.

This is a grown man's game and if someone cannot take a non racial insult, they should go play with kids.

What makes it okay?

Why the hell is it bad for fans to make monkey chants, but its okay for other players to curse you, your mom your ethnic gorup, your country etc?

If you work in a company this is like saying that the company policy is to ban customers from insulting workers but give free okay for workers to insult each other.

Dumd dumb and dumber.

This Materazzi fine is a joke - they should have banned him for a half a season to deter the other racist MF's out there.

So, how do you prove that a player truly made a racist comment?? So any player can now walk up to the referee with allegation that another player made a racist comment against him - think about that....

List of judgements allowed in football today without scientific measurements:
- offsides
- goals dissalowed for not crossing the line
- fouls not given
- players carded for diving when they were tackled
- others given penalties without contact proven
- managers sent off when the ref cannot possibly have heard them first hand from 50 yards away
- clubs fined for fans making monkey chants that the ref may or may not have heard
- players sent of for "disent" in a language that the ref cannot understand

But its racist remarks to players that you want scientific standard of proof on?

What a joke......
