Apparently clubs are not obliged to release players for more than one tournament in a year.

So if a team qualifies for the world cup and afcon , with both being played in 2026, clubs only need to release a player for one of those tournaments.

Do you need that permission during the off-season? The WC won’t be during the season, will it?

Technically, I don’t think players have an off-season. They get a holiday break and they back to pre-season games, training and tours.

sounds like something he just made up, players can move clubs between afcon and the world cup in 2026, which club would decide they can't be called up for AFCON :)

It's not made up. Clubs are not obligated to release players. The EPL Clubs have already affirmed this.

Why would FIFA be getting involved in club football except for greed...

Liverpool, European Champions 2005.

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

Under the world governing body's rules on the release of players it appears clubs are within their rights to block players going to either the Nations Cup or the World Cup later in 2026.

"It is not compulsory to release the same player for more than one "A" representative team final competition per year," Fifa's regulations on the status and transfer of players state.

'it appears' afcon players are released in 2025, group stages will be over for some in 2025 so said player could already be knocked out of the competition before the calendar turns to 2026.

but i read fifa have not commented on this so i shall wait for them to have their say before commenting further.

So which club will block their players from going to the World Cup in 2026 when AFCON is in 2025? A different calendar year! ?
