‘Rock-solid’ Wellity Lucky is destined for Liverpool’s first-team as Reds fight to stop him from leaving

Liverpool’s academy had a slightly quiet year with regards to seeing debuts in the first-team this season.

After a remarkable 2023/24 in which Jurgen Klopp seemed to be plucking youngsters out on a weekly basis, Arne Slot has been more reserved in his approach.

The likes of Trey Nyoni and James McConnell have clearly caught Slot’s eye, while there were first-team debuts for Trent Kone-Doherty and Amara Nallo.

Otherwise, Liverpool’s academy has remained largely untouched by the Dutch coach.

As Rousing The Kop reported earlier this month, however, Slot is set to dip into the Liverpool youth teams ahead of pre-season.

The Liverpool head coach is understood to be targeting the next generation of potential first-team players to play some part in the summer schedule. And after news emerged that the Reds are fighting hard to keep defender Wellity Lucky, it’s clear that he could be one of those in Slot’s thinking.

Wellity Lucky destined for Liverpool first-team
Lucky may not be a player who is hugely familiar to the majority of Liverpool fans. However, the 19-year-old has quietly been rising through the ranks.

Lucky has been described as ‘rock-solid‘ by U21 coach Barry Lewtas after turning in some excellent displays alongside Nallo.

Also capable of playing at right-back, the Spanish-born defender offers a potential option to support Conor Bradley and the incoming Jeremie Frimpong.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are planning ahead with Lucky. As he reported on Wednesday, the Reds have offered the youngster a new, four-year deal amid interest from European clubs.

“Understand Liverpool have offered new 4 year deal to 19 year old talented centre back Wellity Lucky,” says Romano.

“Current contract ends this summer and Liverpool are trying to keep him while clubs in Spain and Germany are also in negotiations trying to sign him.”

Liverpool can’t let Lucky go
Given how poorly Nallo’s debut went back in February, there is a possibility that Lucky has jumped ahead of the 18-year-old in Slot’s thinking.

Name Wellity Lucky
Date of Birth 12/01/2006 (19)
Nationality Spanish
Former Club Real Zaragoza
Position Centre-back, right-back
Joined LFC U13

That may be harsh, but Nallo did not have a single sniff of the first-team after his sending off against PSV Eindhoven.

There are other promising defenders in the academy such as Carter Pinnington, but Liverpool’s desire to tie Lucky down suggests they are hopeful of a first-team breakthrough.

The Reds are clearly on the hunt for a centre-back in the summer transfer market, but with options currently a little on the slim side, Lucky may find himself thrown in during pre-season. They can’t let him go before running the rule over him.

Clearly, there is also a chance that the teenager is plucked from Liverpool and ends up leaving for Europe. The Reds are fighting hard to prevent that, though, and that says a lot about his chances of a future at Anfield.

On my last trip to Marseille, when I was taking a walk I met a group of them plaiting hair in what would be considered the "downtown area." I was walking by and heard them speaking bini and I approached them and greeted them. They were so happy to see me, offered me fruits sef.  I gisted with them and apparently, that was how they made their way to Marseille and have been there for more than 7 years building a life. They all lived in that building, in front of which, they were plaiting hair and apparently, were doing very well, financially.

 That was back in the days o! 1980s. lol. The Binis have evolved significantly since then.

Although even back in the 1980s and 1990s, many men and women (like many other Nigerians) went to other countries for legitimate work like "Beh-jon (Belgium), Jam-ney (Germany), Spay (Spain), Ho-Lan (Netherlands) etc etc" In fact, and surprisingly to me, a huge number of them went to Russia, where they studied medicine and became doctors. A handful of them returned home with their Russian wives and husbands (wives mostly) to practice medicine at the teaching hospital and general hospital.

When you say “a huge number OF THEM…” what exactly do you mean?
Yes, lots of Nigerians went to Russia and Eastern Europe to study. Medicine was a common course. But they went out there on scholarships. Nigerians from every corner of the country, and virtually all men.

That’s why I’m trying to figure out what specifically you refer to by “a huge number of them”.

Prostitution has no borders, it’s the postcard for globalisation. Had the privilege of watching an U13s competition involving EPL, La Liga and Serie A sides. Family member representing an EPL side. The Italian teams were awash with mixed race and jet black preteens. Interestingly, the majority of men in audience were white, most of the black people there, outside of our contingent, were females.

The ease with which these entrepreneurial women pick up the language is incredible. Mums and Italian-born Sons fully fluent in Italian. Almost as astonishing as the choice of attire in some instances, tight in all the right and wrong places and colourful weaves. The hardship fought and conquered, albeit by illicit means in some instances, breeds a level of cocksure confidence seldom seen in European women. The Italian men love it as a side dish, sometimes chosen more often than the main. The Turkish do too. Istanbul is rife with such “startups”, there must be an island of half and halves hidden somewhere in the Ottoman Empire. Good luck to the lot of them.

Marseille, Lille, Strasbourg, well known head offices for the Nigerian (street) big Pharma industry. The French have launched countless operations to shutdown supply lines. Wherever there’s Ebeneezer, there’s the Percy Pleaser. One follows the other. Prostitution is never to far from the drugs trade.

In many instances, the salons and nail bars are fronts. The Nigerians and North Africans are going blow for blow to control the drug scene, the sex trade is a diversification of sorts by the former. Watch them weave but don’t stick around when the 10 year olds on scooters start hanging around the street corners. The sight of choiffeurs usually implies a drive-by or shootout’s in the offing.

Marseille is a safari. An urban Serengeti. A melting pot of cultures, clandestines and the ne plus ultra of street art. Coffee and a croissant at the 7VB is a must. Kick back with a fresh cuppa and watch for the big seven, Lions, Leopards, Rhinos and all sorts.

And yes, as Macron has attested, many of those women have made millions through plaiting and pedicures.

First and foremost, no assumptions have been made. Marseille is Marseille, much as Strasbourg is Strasbourg and business is business in both. The salons more often than not, are fronts for the real entrepreneurship. Las Ramblas in Barcelona, renowned too.

At some point, the continent must stare at its hideous reflection and stop seeing Jekyll where stands Mr Hyde. The few, not the majority, but far too many. But alas, a digression. Apologies for any miscomprehension.
