FIFA rankings: Nigeria fall behind Cape Verde, CAR

by Kazeem Bum

Nigeria have suffered a major decline in the October edition of FIFA rankings released on Wednesday, falling five places to 63rd in the world and 13th among African teams.

Nigeria were 45th at the beginning of the year but since then it has been freefall except for a single upward movement in June when the team moved from 63rd to 60th.

The team have yet to recover from failing to appear at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and it is the first time Cape Verde Islands and Central African Republic will leap over the Super Eagles to be among Africa's top ten.

Central African Republic (49th, up 15) have moved up the ladder for the seventh month in a row, climbing from 131st in March to enter the top 50 in the world for the first time ever.

Cote d'Ivoire remain Africa's best at 16th ahead of Algeria (24), Mali (27) and Ghana (31), Egypt (40), Zambia (41) and Tunisia (45) are just ahead of Gabon (47), Central African Republic (49) and Cape Verde (51) to complete Africa's top 10.

Besides Central Africa Republic, Algeria, Mali and Cape Verde Islands are reaching their best ever positions in the rankings.

Spain and Germany still occupy the peak of the rankings but England have dropped from third to fifth, allowing Portugal and Argentina to move up courtesy of their victories in their recent qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup.

FIFA says the October edition of the rankings reflects the 136 matches played over the past month, 76 of which were 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

To be honest I've taken quite a liking to CV as a country overall, it's the one place in Africa, besides Nigeria, I can actually see myself living in permanently. I'm happy their team is doing well and to be honest I'm glad Nigeria is going down.
