KE$HI: TWO AND A HALF WASTED YEARS

Post by vancity eagle »

As the dust settles we must reflect on the pro longed nightmare which held our football hostage for the past two and a half years.

The outcome of this failed project was as I had predicted. An uninspiring 2nd round exit with a wasted generation of players making little impact on the world stage. A gross miss management of our potential. Will anybody remember this 2014 WC team ? The answer is no. Even though the SE of 1994 also went out in the 2nd round, the fashion of our exit and the style of football we played will leave most thinking of this era when Nigeria or SE are mentioned.

The cult members will point out how we won the ANC after 20 years, and how special Keshi was in this regard. They will always look back to this initial success to excuse the more present and IMPORTANT failures such as the Confederations cup and World Cup. Is anybody still talking about Zambia that won the ANC in 2012 ? I maintain that we were ALWAYS GOING TO WIN ANC 2013. I had predicted we would win 2012 as well but luck was not on our side. The truth is that any average coach would have won the 2013 ANC with Nigeria considering the piss poor state of the AFrican game at the moment. Apart from a half strength Ghana without her top players, and an aging CIV renowned for choking (they served us the worst of this against Greece) who was there to challenge us for that title ? Is it really any surprise that we won, even though we played bland and uninspiring football in all but 2 matches ? I maintain that any average coach would have won that title with Nigeria. It was one of the weakest tournaments in recent history. Only the diehards will fool themselves into thinking otherwise, but the truth is the truth.

This ANC victory was the death of whatever bright potential this current crop of players had. One deceptively huge step forward, but in reality 2 backwards steps which would confine this team to mediocrity and a wasted opportunity to make history with SE, and indeed with Keshi himself, but he chose greed, corruption, and his ego as more important. This was the turning point for this team, and was precisely the reason that I had cheered for the CIV to beat Nigeria. Had we indeed lost that game and Keshi were fired, I am convinced we would have had a much more successful worldcup, and IMO it would have been worth it.

So drunk on power and hubris this coaching fraud continued to take the SE down into the gutter taking junks like Gambo, Ujah, Babatunde, Akpala, Eze, Mba to the Confederations cup to disgrace Africa. He continued to ignore our best players and build a strong depth chart of players who would be able to make a deep run in Brazil. He compounded this stupidity with his ridiculous 30 man and Tony Harris infected squad. In the end cutting much of the real quality letting go of the likes of Joel Obi and Nosa for junkyard trash that had no business anywhere near Brazil. The football fraud took Nigerians for a ride. Many saw this coming from a long way away. Slowly but surely the magic spell he had cast over Nigerians began to fade and what looked like something magnificent began to look like the true garbage that it was.

Looking at this tournament in Brazil it is apparent that THERE ARE NO REAL TEAMS THAT STAND OUT FROM THE REST. The difference between top teams of the past, and the smaller teams is very insignificant. Brazil 2014 was tailor made for Nigeria, or any African team for that matter, to do very well in the heat, humidity, and the second most populous Black nation on the planet. There will never be such a great opportunity again I fear. A real coach would have beaten that mediocre French team, who put up absolutely no fight against the Germans. A German team that Ghana and Algeria had both pushed to the very limits. The German team was also a team that a well prepared and well managed Nigeria COULD ALSO HAVE BEATEN. Yes it would have been glorious, but in the end after 2 and a half wasted years, all Keshi could do was bring on a Kilmarnock reject to replace one of our key players and the rest is history.

Many told us that X and Y player was not needed. That it was about team chemistry and harmony. Well Keshi's retarded picks did not help that at all. The same clowns failed to see that depth on the bench was needed. This was a problem we got away with at the ANC, again because it was such a poor competition our deficiencies were never really exposed. They told us what has X and Y player done in the past ? Yet it was Odemwingie who many viciously campaigned against who was one of our best and hardest working players and who gave us our first WC win in 16 years. He started and finished that play by running through the Bosnian midfield, laying it off to Emenike, continuing the run and finishing off Emenikes cutback. Perhaps the highlite of this tournament and a slap in the face to all Keshi supporters who told us he was right to drop X and Y player.

In the end how much different was WC 2014 from WC 2010 ? Not much to be honest. In the end after giving Keshi 2 and a half years, and more chance to succeed than any other coach not named Westerhoff, we still lost by one goal to Argentina. Same as Lagerback. We still drew with an Asian opposition. Same as Lagerback. The only real difference was the bit of luck which swung in opposite directions in 2010 and 2014. In 2010 we were unlucky that Kaita had a moment of madness against Greece. In 2014 we were lucky that the linesmen raised their flags, chalking off a legitimate Bosnian goal. These are the little things that can change the entire nature of a WC. There was nothing convincing about this 2014 WC, nothing at all. The fact that Keshi was still experimenting during the competition, speaks to the grossly mismanaged tenure Keshi had as coach. His tenure was filled with so many baffling and counter productive decisions that I will not go into. It was a total waste of time and talent.

The semi finals and history were really within our grasp, but Keshi pissed it all away. He and he alone is to blame. No competition on the bench, nothing, NONE. In a worldcup, shameful. Good riddance that this fool is gone, and hopefully we can learn and move on. We need a serious coach who has big goal and who can plan ahead long term to achieve those big goals. Not a coach who settles for the mediocre and who thumps his chest over small victories. There was no ambition with Keshi, none whatsoever. We need to plan now to be able to make the semi finals in Russia. We need meritocracy, not corruption.

Good riddance, and don't let the door hit you on the way out, BIG BO$$.

You have been vindicated, as a matter of fact we should all say sorry to you for all names we called you. Big humble pie serves brother. Keshi really messed up. I think the realization came with the 30 man team he selected, for me thats when I knew we have been taken for a ride by a fraudulent coach. Shame on him. He lost the opportunity to attain greatness becos of greed. Lets hope we learn from it and move forward.

If you can honestly say Nigerian football is not in a better place than 2.5 years ago then we have different perspectives.

bros let us just move on. This was really a painful experience because we could have been so much better. The Keshinistas have been exposed, there is nowhere for them to hide. Let us just hope that whoever is the next coach is properly vetted and is given the patience and cooperation that is needed. Let us hope the next coach is not corrupt and seeks greatness not mediocrity.

vancity eagle, great observations and opinions.
Please don't stop there without naming a preferable replacement and his qualifications,
plus where you believe he/she would take the SE in the next two years.

Welcome back VE. Na true you talk oh! We even get luck say we no enter group like Ghana.

Who let dude out the cage??? Didn't read a line dude wrote, didn't have to. Its VE for heaven's sake. We all know what to expect (atleast he respected Keshi's name this time around). Don't know what u think, but if someone who was hired 2+ years ago matched all the SE records, then I personally do not tink its time wasting. Time wasting is after all this, we get someone else to continue

So, when Keshi gets knocked out of WC R16, it is down to bad coaching, but when Siasia is knocked out of ANC Quals, it is bad luck. Gotcha.
vancity eagle wrote:The truth is that any average coach would have won the 2013 ANC with Nigeria considering the piss poor state of the AFrican game at the moment.
And wasn't the state of African football piss poor in 2011/12 when Siasia did not qualify? Oh, yes... Bad luck.

You are not constant in your analysis and your attribution of factors. You are the same as the Keshi fanatics who give him full credit for every victory, and absolve him of every failure.

Keshi failed at the WC. Yes there were other factors, but his squad selection ultimately did him in, and I hope he is man enough to accept that. That same selection got him success at the ANC. People screamed at the exclusion of Osaze etc, and the inclusion of Mba etc. it worked. This leads me to believe Keshi is a risk taker with a big ego, ready to sacrifice arguably better talents for players who fit his (disciplinary/coaching) system. It worked at ANC and failed at WC. Simple. I judge him by that. I won't waste time with conjectures about money and agents till I see hard proof.

Constructively, we should be looking at what positive and negative lessons can be drawn from the Keshi era, for the improvement of the SE, the FA, the league, the training of coaches including Keshi himself, and the selection criteria for future coaches.
