How would Nigeria fare at this Copa America

Post by juventuss »

Looking at the pace of the game, teams like Mexico, Peru, Chile, and even Venezuela have soo much pace and play a much more open game. A decent amount of them are applying the high press game right while still having loads of energy late in the game. I can see us making it out of the group stages and even fancy our chances against an Argentina or Colombia. I'd fear a Chile, Paraguay or Mexico

The only teams I think we can't beat at this tournament are Chile, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.
Winners do it the right way.

If you give Nigeria two weeks to prepare we can beat most teams. We are a good tournament team. Look at our AFCON record. How many times has Nigeria reached the finals or Semifinals at the Afcon?

We will beat Mexico, just have to stop their crosses from the left wing. Watch out for the low cross to Chicharito.

We have played them before to a draw.

We can get a draw vs Haiti but we'd lose to every other team.

They can have whatever they want. 70% of the time that Nigeria loses to lower ranked African teams, it is because of factors like preparation.

Even on the African continent we are one of the worst in that regard, yes even worse than many smaller economies. How many African countries would sabotage themselves by playing matches in their most inhospitable locations, especially when they have foreign raised/born players or foreign adapted players that have no chance in hell of coping. How many countries (even African countries), have changed coaches as much as we have since independence. How many African countries always end up arriving 1 or 2 days before matches, with severe jetlag.

How many countries (yes even African countries) have had two rival NFFs competing for attention and resources. The reality is Nigeria is one of the worst prepared countries even by African standards. Look at Egypt, they are the EXACT opposite of a badly prepared African side. In fact, I would attribute their treble AFCON wins mostly to preparation! If Nigeria had the same exact logistical/preparatory route as Egypt in that period, I think we could have been the team of that era just as easily. This was an Egyptian team that was camped for 1 MONTH! Not preparing for 1 month, but camped for 1 month! They changed their league schedule. Actually it may have been even longer, I should go and check again.

What Nigerian team in history has ever prepared for that long? The closest I can think of a well prepared Nigerian team, would be the Mid 1980s to mid 1990s Nigerian side, not because of the specific preparation at any given time, but simply because of continuity! And we know how that turned out! The team was on its way to a treble, had Abacha not intervened. The momentum even continued as far as 2000, where Cameroon had to cheat to beat us in the final.

There is just no way in hell that a well prepared Nigerian side can be pushed around in Africa, or by mid level Americas sides.
Buhari, whose two terms thankfully ground to a constitutional halt in May. (One thing both democracies have going for them is that their leaders, however bad, have only two terms to swing the wrecking ball.) Under Buhari, growth per head also plunged to 0. An economic agenda drawn from the dusty pages of a 1970s protectionist handbook failed to do the trick. Despite Buhari’s promise to tame terrorism and criminality, violence flourished. Despite his reputation for probity, corruption swirled. FT

Ohenhen,

We will fail because we don't have a settled squad.

We have the players to be world champions
Very few teams can boast of the likes of ihenacho, Moses, mikel , musa , igalo, ndidi, onazi, etc
Our problem is incompetent coaching

COPA America has no qualifying rounds , you get invited. Only this current one had an exception with qualifiers for the concacaf teams. I think the SE would do well if only the NFF comes through .. they will tie Mexico for sure..Argentina will knock us out

They will lift the trophy on paper and analysis IF only they were in South America. :tic:

I KPOM the highlighted.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in.
