Nigerian government under fire

The Nigerian government has come under fire after plans to send 20 politicians - all expenses paid - to the African Cup of Nations were discovered.

Phonelines on Lagos-based Brila FM's regular phone-in were jammed with calls from listener demanding that the trip be cancelled.

"They're going there to waste Nigeria's taxpayers money when many of us are swimming in poverty," said Jones Afebi, a Nigeria fan.

The total cost of the trip is estimated at $400,000 - that's $20,000 per head - a far cry from the average monthly wage of Nigerians, which sits at $50.

Fears that politics will seep into team affairs have also been raised: "They should watch the matches on television at home and not go and cause distractions in the camp like (they did) in Mali," another fan warned.

Nigeria will hope to avoid the kind of political and in-fighting that accompanied their 2002 campaign in Mali, where they were knocked out by Senegal in the semi-finals.

This is why we should have an independent NFA where the Chairman slot is only for those who will not request estacode a la Kodjo Williams.

As long as NFA remains Sports Ministry's parastatal, funds will always be found for jamborees. Anybody who's worked in the Ministry knows what am talking about.

shameless theiving corrupted *kindpeople*.
Those guys will probably all share one room, and rent out the others to supporters club members for extra spending money. They will then proceed to buy container loads of goods in tunis as well as the compuslary visits to sample tunisian ashis.

Why una dey make mouth. These are lawmakers and they approved the budget for the SE, so why cant they go there and see for themselves wetin dem approve the money for.

Just kidding. This is a monumental wate of public funds and should be probed. I hope the finance minister will not approve, so they will have to spend senate money on this.

I doubt the tory though, as one thing that has emerge over the last 6 months is that to spend this kind of money, you have to get past Igonji-Iwale, and the lady is not for the bending.
