Kai...such a joy to watch. The spine of that team was special.

Pastor west ------ Uche

Oliseh

Kanu

This is when we were kings. This game and the 94 team laid the foundation of CE. Those of you useless cybers that have been on CE for less than 10 yrs should be made to watch this game, 94 Italy game then take a 100 question multiple choice exam to retain your CE membership. To pass you must score 95% or get banned for life.

See ojoro pk. Ortega dived and got a pk for the 2nd goal, these days he would've gotten a yellow for diving. Taribo barely touched him. Kai.....these refs have been robbing us for decades. :boo:

Sometimes I wonder if Nigeria should have just gone all in and stuck with the Atlanta team for the Super Eagles. Of course, it would have meant the loss of certain stars like Finidi...but I feel that the addition of the old guard into the 1998 team messed with team chemistry.

That 96 team at times played some hella good football and there was an ease and camaraderie to them.

Always credit the Atlanta tournament for turning me into an Amokachi fan. I watched each of our games several times....and all I can say is that if you build a team, you better get you an AMOKACHI.

Finidi was only 27 in 1998 - not really part of an old guard. It made sense to include experienced players like Finidi and Adepoju in the 98 squad.

Atlanta 96 team was not as good as the 1994 World Cup team. The 1994 World Cup team had an attack that was ruthless. The best of the Olympic team went to 1998 and got thrashed 4-1 by Denmark. The reason was as Emeka Ezeugo pointed out. The midfield. JJ Okocha was definitely super skilled but he was a massive defensive hole in the middle. Mutiu Adepoju hard work was largely unrecognized in 1994. absence of Amunike was massive. Ikpeba was not a replacement. Then the back line of 1994 WC had a solid CB pairing of Chidi Nwanu and Okechukwu. Taribo was overrated.

Watched both teams, 96 team was a 94 improvement.
August Eguavon, Siasia, Yekini, even Iroha were upgraded in 1996.
1998 had issues, ego, lack of team chemistry and out of shape Rufai.
1996 was by far the best Nigerian side I have ever watched.
I watched them life, during the group stages against Brazil.
For the first time in my life, I saw an African team match brazil inch for inch and had brazil on her heels.
The only weak point for 96 was perhaps Tijani, finidi would have likely been an upgrade.

Take away the first starting 11 of 94 you are really left with no team.
