Rivers Angels should have been up at least 5 or 6 goals - missed a ton of opportunities. Alice Ogebe one of the biggest culprits.
Anyhow, 2-0 is a good start. They should be able to throttle the Nigerien team next.

This is not an away win as the game was played in Ivory Coast. This is a tournament format, they play a team from Niger in the next few days at same venue. Top 2 teams from the 2 groups qualify for the semis. The WAFU B champion & runner up qualify for the final championship in Egypt later in the year together with champions of the other zones.

Spot on. Watched it too. Ogebe miss no be small. They game should have been at least 4 nil. Especially in the 2nd half, Rivers Angels were tearing them apart.

Ogebe does not seem to be developing; by now she should be on the roster of the national team.

The zone thing sounds like a fraud.
A & B are where the better teams are.
Yet Pinnick is/was in the executive council and he did nothing about it.

I believe the zone thing for female and youth football is about fund conservation.

That makes perfect sense, hard to argue against. :thumb:
It’s hard to see how a female team or youth team from some countries will be able to attract the funds to travel around the continent.
Niger for instance are participating but would they have been able to honour commitments in South Africa and then Kenya and then Egypt?

These are countries that hardly recognise women’s football in the first place.

Why rush into CL. It does not offer development.
Why not spend time developing the various local leagues?
By then things about funds are made better, are sorted out, etc.

Oguleftie,

I would argue that it does with ample evidence.

The visibility provided by media coverage encourages young girls to participate in the sport. That is an index of development for starters. Think of this for one moment -- Until the 1960s, women were still officially barred from this sport in Nigeria going back to a British colonial edict issued in the 1950s ( I have a book on this and a scholarly piece is accepted for publication in the International Journal o the History of Sport). Women in the old Midwest began to play openly in a league beginning in the late 1960s/1970s and the Simbiat Abiola Cup introduced first nationwide competition which helped bring some girls to prominence. Today, we have professional women players earning a living playing this sport and supporting families. That is encouraging young ladies to participate in the sport nationwide seeking to be the next Oshoala. All those signify development. A continent-wide competition will drive this sport to several African countries where women clubs do not currently exist

.....Think of development of club football (men) in Nigeria, for example. Club football did not blossom until CAF edict barring non-clubs from participating in continental club competitions, which meant Nigeria had to follow suit by barring local selections from participating in the FA Cup (first by introducing Godfrey Amachree Cup restricted only to clubs, temporarily). I can go on and on on this very issue.

The issue is not one of development but, perhaps, an issue of commercial viability of the sport at this time. However, even that is possible to achieve in the long term. Presently, men football in Africa is barely scratching the surface in the area of commercial viability. Only in few spots is this viability being harnessed (i.e. in few places in North Africa and South Africa). In the rest of the continent, the men sport STILL largely depends on the state.
