Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has been invited to participate in an online videoconferences this week involving coaches of men’s national teams of the FIFA member federations which will be presided over by Arsene Wenger who is the world football ruling body’s Chief of Global Football Development.

The videoconferences which will hold on Tuesday October 19 2021 and Thursday October 21 2021, will see Wenger coordinating a consultation touching on a potential new football calendar from 2024 – international windows, the FIFA World Cup every two years, as well as about players’ health, and other pertinent matters concerning men’s national football teams.

The biennial FIFA World Cup proposal is expected to be a hotly debated topic during the men’s national team coaches’ online consultation with Wenger. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is already in support of the idea, but it’s uncertain if Rohr will back his employer and speak in favour of it during the online meetings.

“As a coach of the men`s national teams, their input is essential.

Opportunities for us to come together are few and far between, but we must embrace these occasions as such dialogue helps us all to protect the unique place that football has in the world and to make it truly global,” Wenger said in a Press Release put out by FIFA on Monday

The statement added: “Consultations with all stakeholders are continuing and FIFA reminds fans from around the world they can send their ideas and feedback on the new football calendar.

“Two-time FIFA Women`s World Cup winning coach Jill Ellis is leading the Technical Advisory Group for women’s football.”

I don't know why FIFA wants to do this; perhaps, they are looking at the money such will generate, but what of the health and wellbeing of the players? The intended change if it happens is going to create alot of issues for all, mostly for the players (fatigues, wornouts and injuries)

They might as well just create a World Nations league like UEFA did, the winners of all the other continents should just play each other every two years or a year between the World Cup and it will cut down on qualifiers that are becoming tedious as teams can be placed according to the FIFA rankings.

Highbury,

What is the problem in Rohr, as NT Manager for Nigeria, being present in a meeting of all African NT Managers with FIFA? What exactly is the problem here?

Nothing is wrong with that. I am responding to the article which is insinuating that it is isn't certain where Rohr's opinion on the proposal by FIFA lies. I am only stating that his opinion is irrelevant. He is representing Nigeria. Thus, he will only voice the opinion of the NFF which is a body empowered by the people of Nigeria.

Okay and thanks for the clarification. I think, however, this is an opportunity to learn the true feelings of each of those managers rather than what their FAs may feel. In this type of exploration, it is not entirely unexpected that the Fa and the national coach may differ. The FA is more likely to focus on revenue issues while the national coach may focus more on his team's health. Those two goals may sometimes be at opposing ends of a debate.

Personally, I support FIFA's attempt to change the calendar and move to a more frequent World Cup cycle. Theoretically, this means more finances which would entail access to more funds for African teams. However, it could also mean that some monies that Europe plans to grab via its competitions including the new European Nations league would have to be shelved. In any case, it may well solve some of the problems that affect the current football calendar e.g. players leaving their clubs to play for their NTs in the middle of the season. At the moment, the campaign for buy-in is on but ultimately, this is about finances and how such finances will be distributed. We will see how this pans out in the long run.
