Taribo was a beast. I'm surprised Henry picked Bergkamp over Messi and Zidane as best player he played with.

Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
I hear ya, but seeing West at Inter playing with other world class players was a different beast. There are a lot of Inters full matches on youtube and watching back you realize how much of a beast defensively he was, and then was still comfortable with the ball at his feet would join the attack and not look out of place, doing Zizou type pirouettes...They would send him to man mark the best player on the other team. The Inter vs Milan games were helele they would send him to man mark George Weah. Was an epic battle, none of our defenders since comes close...Scipio Africanus wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 2:49 pm Ask Denmark about Taribo. I'm sure they have fond memories.

I guess it's because Bergkamp was fast and has a quick release of the ball to a streaming Thierry.cic old boy wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 2:40 pm Taribo was a beast. I'm surprised Henry picked Bergkamp over Messi and Zidane as best player he played with.
That is what is lacking in our SE - players holding unto the ball for too long, instead of making the simple quick pass.

Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
I'm kind of reading meaning into Henry's words and I've heard Henry say Bergkamp is the best player he played with on more than one occasion. I have a feeling he says that because he had better chemistry with Bergkamp than any other player he played with, which includes Messi and Zidane.

Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
Taribo is certainly one of Nigeria’s best defenders of all time but I think his biggest hurrah wasn’t Milan but Derby County. It is no easy feat to, single-handedly, transform the worst team in the EPL into a competitive squad. They should have given him a knighthood for that
Cheers.
Cheers.
Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
I completely agree. Taribo - for a 3 or 4 period was a top 5 CB. He was a colossus. But he doesn’t get enough respect cause his career seemed to derail after the AC Milan controversy. But even if you watched him when he played for Derby County, he was still the same ol’ Ribo

Taribo was unplayable at Inter. NOTHING got past him. He was such a joy to watch.maceo4 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 4:00 pmI hear ya, but seeing West at Inter playing with other world class players was a different beast. If Inter wasn’t robbed by the Italian FA/Referees/Juve (and this was proven), that title was theirs.

Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
Agreed. He didn’t get the respect he deserved for putting that team on his back, cause you know, Derby County and all. Taribo was such a defender. There is no Nigerian I rate ahead of him. No one.TonyTheTigerKiller wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 4:41 pm Taribo is certainly one of Nigeria’s best defenders of all time but I think his biggest hurrah wasn’t Milan but Derby County. Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
It’s a travesty that even on this forum we don’t often enough talk about Ribo as one of our greats. He is. He suffered from being in a team that under-achieved, and his uncompromising attitude earned him no few friends. But I don’t think any Nigerian defender, Keshi included, played at the level that he did in club football. He was literally impossible to get around.
And his late role at Derby has him down as one of the best free-transfers of the premiership era.

Bergkamp was a magician! and he was one of those players strikers like because he dedicated himself to making the striker better! His main purpose was to make you score and not for him to score.cic old boy wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 2:40 pm Taribo was a beast. Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
So happy to hear this as my nickname in secondary school was Taribo West, due to my qualities as a no-nonsense defender!
We had an inter-class tournament once and the best winger in our set was playing for one class that had all the best players. I was playing for a class that had useless bookworms. LOL. So I was designated to mark the guy. I marked this guy the whole game, he didnt get one chance! Finally, dude did one shimmy and took me left, abandoned me there and moved to the right. I didnt know how i fell on the floor and saw this guy galloping like antelope past me! I heard screams from the crowd! applause! The girls screaming like someone has seen their pant! Immediately, i stood up-- i wasnt the fastest, but i turned around and chased this guy! Chased him that I even passed my fellow teammates who were chasing him down! I got to him and I dont know how i did it, but I leaped and did an outrageous sliding tackle! I won the ball first and then, did my customary follow through, which waya'ed his knee, to make sure he knows never to try that nonsense he did when he dribbled me! LOL. Not only was it not a penalty, since I cleanly got the ball first. I ended his game right there. Dude had to be substituted! I stood up from that tackle, with the guy on the floor and the whole crowd screaming with amazement "Taribo! Taribo! Taribo!"
I literally used to watch games of Taribo, trying to model my game after him! What a defender!

I thought I was the only one who still considered this the best goal I have ever seen. I remember opening my mouth when I saw it. Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
Maybe some people did not watch the preview.
I watched it live. On that day they had close to a 30min talk before the program started, and the program lasted an hour.
Regarding Henry he was making reference to some issues, hence the cut-in response "did he follow you back to the dressing room".
Nobody questions whether Taribo was a good defender.
In his generation (and the word 'generation' implied) Uche Okechukwu was their best defender.

Re: Thierry Henri on Taribo West
Good story. Taribo was the defender I modelled my game on too when I started playing defence. He was an excellent man-marker and would often pinch the ball away from an attacker before they were ready to receive it.danfo driver wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 8:07 pm So happy to hear this as my nickname in secondary school was Taribo West, due to my qualities as a no-nonsense defender!

Keshi and them must have been amazing. No one on this forum ranks West as one of the best ever

I also went to a school that had someone nicknamed Taribo but that was because the bobo was ugly.danfo driver wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 8:07 pm So happy to hear this as my nickname in secondary school was Taribo West, due to my qualities as a no-nonsense defender!
