Watford are closing in on a £3.5million deal for Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu. The Nigerian, 24, is expected to undergo a medical on Wednesday prior to agreeing a four and a half year contract.

Watford had initially played down links with the former Gent flyer when he missed training amid talk of a pending bid last week. However, negotiations have kicked on and a deal is close to conclusion.

The Nigeria international, who has 13 caps and two goals for his country, will be Watford's fourth signing of the January transfer window after defenders Samir, Hassane Kamara and midfielder Edo Kayembe.

Kalu (on floor) caused concern when he collapsed during a game with Marseille last August

All three started in manager Claudio Ranieri's side for their crucial clash with Newcastle United last Saturday where they escaped with a 1-1 draw.

Kalu caused concern when he collapsed in the opening minutes of Bordeaux's game with Marseille in August only to later explain he was fine and put the episode down to 'a dizzy spell'.

Meanwhile, Watford are working on obtaining a work permit for Colombian signing Yaser Asprilla after he officially joined the club from Envigado.

The teenager became the second youngest player to appear for his national side, aged 18 years and 58 days against Honduras on Sunday.

Asprilla could yet go out on loan but is touted as a bright talent. His move was initially agreed in August but could not be ratified until this month.

Na wa o,
Watford wan turn to Super Eagles, north London branch,
Etebo
Ekong
Dennis
Okoye
Kalu.

Aside from Nigerians, they have a large African player list.
No wonder they are proving stubborn to release players.
They better survive EPL odawise na stone we go stone dem.

The Pozzos scout Nigerians a lot.

Not just Watford but Granada, though none in the current GN squad.

Ighalo (both), Isaac Success, Ramon Azeez. The Pozzos should be given honorary Nigerian citizenship.

Is this even good news? Firstly, Watford might be relegated and secondly, no one is going to bench Denis or Sarr for him.

Don't be surprised if Dennis doesn't stay for long.

You guys were complaining about the SE, Dennis I don't think is loyal in general. If he gets a big money offer, best believe he will take it, if the contracts and offers align.

I have seen some articles/quotes where he alluded to such. I think Watford may also see it as a good return on their investment. So yeah they may be stacked, but there might be players leaving as well.

The other option is a good loan spell in the interim, if there are delays.

Exactly!! Watford simply seeking inexpensive buys to escape. But will such signings save them. Perhaps but for players signed it might mean a quick and not well thought move at the end of the season.

They could be relegated. On your second point, Kalu is better than Denis❗️

Cheers.

He was better, I agree but not at the moment, Kalu has been off form for a while.

Congrats to him. Hope he gets into the first 11.

As an aside, it is extraordinary that a 24 yo international player was sold for only 3.5 million in today’s hyper inflated market. Especially when one considers that Watford paid 27 million to buy his new team-mate Sarr from another French club (and Kalu is also joining from a French club).

It isn't too surprising if you take into consideration Kalu's injury record since he joined Bordeaux which also played a part in why they were willing to let him go. It's a risky investment but can also be a success.

I believe that Watford are signing kalu to replace Dennis. Dennis will most likely depart Watford by the end of the season irrespective of their relegation status and by their success rate of Dennis transaction, they have decided to invest on another Nigerian with Similar background. For example
Dennis was signed for $4 million, by the end of the season, he would be sold for
16 to 20M. ROI of 16M
Invest into another talented but cheap Nigerian (why not)

How much did Watford pay for Dennis?
And how much did Everton pay for Demarai Gray?

How much did Watford pay for Dennis?
How much did Leicester City pay for Jonny Evans?
And how much did Everton pay for Demarai Gray?

Yet these all turned out to be GREAT signings.
