Ten Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs have been given a lifeline to play continental football through the Aiteo Cup as the 2022 edition’s Round of 64 kicks off today across 32 centres.

The 10 clubs had failed to get a continental ticket during the just concluded 2021/22 NPFL season.

They are Kwara United, Rangers, Nasarawa United, Enyimba and Sunshine Stars.

Others are Abia Warriors, Niger Tornadoes, Lobi Stars, Gombe United and Akwa United.

League champions Rivers United and runners up, Plateau United will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League next season while Remo Stars who finished third will be in CAF Confederations Cup.

The second Confederations Cup ticket is reserved for the winner of the AITEO Cup.

The 10 NPFL clubs will however vie for the trophy with as many as 54 clubs which include other NPFL clubs, the Nigeria National League (NNL) and other amateur clubs.

For matches involving the 10 NPFL clubs in the round of 64 to be played this weekend, Enyimba will battle Ijebu United in Benin while Dreams FC slug it out with Niger Tornadoes in Enugu.

In Kaduna, ABS FC and Lobi Stars will face each other while Rangers Int’l and ABJ FC will play at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja.

Sunshine Stars will take on Osun United in Ikenne as Aba will play host to Essien Ayi and Akwa United.

Rovers FC will be up against Gombe United in Makurdi just as Yobe Desert Stars and Kwara United slug it out in Kaduna

Warri will welcome Ottasolo FC and Abia Warriors while Eaglets FC and Nasarawa United will square off at the ABS Kaduna.

In the event that Remo Stars emerge winners of the Aiteo Cup, Kwara United who placed fourth in the just concluded NPFL season will be handed the remaining continental ticket.

It is not FA Cup. You should use the proper nomenclature.

...empty stadium, where is the allure here? They should make the gate fee 5 or 10 naira and pack the stadium.

It isnt really about the cost. It is not expensive for this stage, as far as i am told. It is about 2 things primarily .... 1. Lack of publicity, and 2. Teams not being attractive at the venue.

How we gonna promote and progress this sport up to national level, and winning continental and world tournaments?

That's to be expected when the match venue is in Warri, I doubt there are many Remo fans while this is the first time I've heard of "Positive change Mentality" FC

Are there additional results from other games this weekend? Who moved on and who left?

Most of them are on the respective pages of the clubs participating. Our Champions League reps both failed to show up for their fixtures which not only brings into question the value of the cup but also exposes the shoddy logistics that has been the case for the past 2 seasons now.

...a fairly descent stadium like this built in Warri suppose to have football enthusiasts in the city. The owners and organizers need to attract fans to see home town club. The english football we often emulate do have the epl giants go to lowly sides' stadium and it's packed.

It is really a shame. This competition has been affected by such shoddiness for years now. I recall being in the country and one game in Enugu was only advertised at the entrance to the stadium. Such shoddiness means very few people new that a game was to be played.

   The Cup is useless if it no longer provides a gateway to the continent. It has been really devalued by the NFF.

If I am AITEO, this is enough reason to withdraw from sponsoring this rather useless competition.
