What the SE should expect during the WC in 2026

Post by Bigpokey24 »

Three countries per group
A unique feature of the group structure during the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico is, firstly, the three countries per group. In previous editions of the FIFA World Cup, there were always four.

Group stage matches: no ties, direct decision
Secondly, the new format results in the unique fact that a group match cannot end in a tie. If the score is still tied after 90 minutes of play, penalty kicks will immediately follow to decide the match (without playing an extension first).

Nine days between nations first matches
Another consequence of the record number of 48 participants is that there are nine days between the dates on which the first and last countries first enter a match.

Knock out system starts with round of 32
For the remainder of the tournament, the schedule will continue according to the traditional knockout system. The round of 32, the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final consist of one match. In case of a tie at the end of the regular match time, two 15-minute extensions will follow. If this does not yield a winner, it will go to penalties.

1+1+2+4+8+16+48=80 matches
A total of 80 matches are scheduled for the World Cup in North America. Previously, there were a maximum of 64 matches. The eighty matches in the 2026 World Cup are divided into 48 group matches (in groups A to P) + 16 x round of 32 + 8 x 8th finals + 4 x quarterfinals + 2 x semifinals + 1 match for third place and, of course, the World Cup Final.

FIFA plans to kill the drama of the World Cup group stage.
What a 48-team World Cup could, and should, look like
It’s difficult to fully conceptualize what a 48-team World Cup will look like. Qualifying always springs surprises, and FIFA’s rankings can weirdly fluctuate. But in 2022, 16 groups of three would have looked something like this:

Group A: Qatar, Wales, Ecuador
Group B: England, Colombia, Algeria
Group C: Argentina, Poland, Saudi Arabia
Group D: France, Chile, Australia
Group E: Spain, Japan, Tunisia
Group F: Belgium, Morocco, Canada
Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Cameroon
Group H: Portugal, Iran, Mali
Group I: Italy, Peru, Jamaica
Group J: Mexico, Croatia, UAE
Group K: Netherlands, Senegal, Iraq
Group L: Denmark, South Korea, New Zealand
Group M: Germany, Nigeria, Panama
Group N: Uruguay, Ukraine, Ghana
Group O: Switzerland, Costa Rica, Egypt
Group P: United States, Sweden, Oman

Whereas 12 groups of four would look something like this:

Group A: Qatar, Wales, Ecuador, Ghana
Group B: England, Colombia, Ukraine, Algeria
Group C: Argentina, United States, Poland, Saudi Arabia
Group D: France, Sweden, Chile, Australia
Group E: Spain, Japan, Tunisia, Panama
Group F: Belgium, Croatia, Morocco, Canada
Group G: Brazil, Switzerland, Serbia, Cameroon
Group H: Portugal, Iran, Mali, Jamaica
Group I: Italy, Peru, Costa Rica, Oman
Group J: Mexico, Germany, Nigeria, UAE
Group K: Netherlands, Senegal, South Korea, New Zealand
Group L: Denmark, Uruguay, Egypt, Iraq

The makeup of the hypothetical groups, though, are unimportant. The incentives and stakes within each of them are what depend on the format. And it feels like the drama of the group stage, which has just gripped us for two weeks, depends on the redrawing up of what a 48-team World Cup will look like.

The interval between games is long-- even longer than the players are used to at their clubs. It is not dictated just by number of groups but by TV times and money. Not necessarily a bad thing since soccer does depend on money as well.
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events -- Daniel Kahneman (2011), Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

I do not like this format in the least. What’s the point in going through the rigors of qualifying for the World Cup only to end up going home after 2 games? I think they should stick with the 4 per group format with 12 groups. Top 2 in each group plus the best eight 3rd place finishers advance to the knockout rounds❗️

Cheers.

Inter-confederation play-offs
Edit
A playoff tournament involving six teams will be held to decide the last two FIFA World Cup berths:[10] these consist of one team per confederation, except for UEFA, and one additional team from the confederation of the host countries (CONCACAF).

Two of the teams will be seeded based on the World Rankings, and these seeded teams will play for a FIFA World Cup berth against the winners of the first two knockout games involving the four unseeded teams.

The four-game tournament is to be played in one or more of the host countries and to be used as a test event for the FIFA World Cup
