The decision of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), to adopt the abridged league format for the 2022/2023 season has not gone down well with most of the clubs.

Consequently, the aggrieved clubs who prefer a full league have threatened to boycott the proposed December 28 date for the draws as announced by the IMC.

It will be recalled that after a recent meeting with the clubs in Abuja, the IMC announced that the draws for 2022/2023 NPFL season will be held on December 28 while the league itself will kick-off on January 8, 2023.

The IMC also agreed to give the 20 clubs the sum of N10m each as takeoff grants ahead of the 2022/2023 season.

However, the Club Owners Association, the umbrella body of the 20 NPFL clubs has rejected the abridged league as announced by the IMC.

In a statement, the Club Owners Association said “Member clubs had in a joint meeting with the IMC unanimously voted for a full league with 17 to 3 votes, and against a proposal for an abridged league, only for some group of persons to go behind to push for an abridged league which is a caricature of the NPFL, a league once adjudged as the number one league in Africa.

“Club Owners, therefore, wish to state unequivocally that the decision of the clubs on a full league format remains unchanged and hereby reject the proposed abridged league in its entirety, assuring that a full league format can still be completed within the normal time frame, with submissions of the CAF Competitions representatives and alignment of the NPFL with the international football calendar.”

A club chairman from the north-central who spoke to Daily Trust on condition anonymity said “The NFF mandated the IMC to come and discuss with us and we have told them what we want. I wonder why it is difficult for them to take our message back to the NFF.

“We are not going to be part of the draws. They must listen to us. After all, we are ready to make any sacrifice to have a full league season,” he said.

i think the LMC wants to reduce the amount of games this season, so they can start with a new league format in the fall. they want the league's timetable/duration to be similar to the rest of the world like 2022/2023 etc..

Seems the league will kick off jan 28th. The meeting they had failed woefully so the league has been postponed . I am thinking of investing / buying one NPFL team

Also sunset do not reply when you ask him questions about the league so do not bother

In that the league is split into two zones of 10 teams where the top 4 teams in both groups compete in the super 8 to settle our champion and continental reps, the upside to it (for players) is they'll have to cover less distance for away fixtures but that also means they'll go from a 38 Game season to an 18 (+7 if they make the playoffs) game season which just isn't enough IMO.

Ah BigP! My apologies if I did that as it wasn’t on purpose. But the LMC aren't anymore they've been replaced by the IMC (Interim management company) for whatever reason and just by their title alone its hard to take them seriously

Why we rejected Abridged League format for the NPFL - Club Owners

The football club Owners Association of Nigeria have given reasons why it rejected the proposed Abridged League format put forward by the Interim Management committee of the Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL.

In a Christmas message to the Football stakeholders in Nigeria, club Owners in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman Chief Barr Isaac Danladi and the Executive Secretary Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka described the proposed Abridged League format as a caricature of the NPFL, a League once rated as the best League in Africa.

The Association said , the only time Abridged League was played was in a special circumstances when there was leadership crisis in the Federation which affected the smooth running of football thus Abridged League was taken as an option.
But for a League that has stabilized over the years to revert back to Abridged League is like taking the system ten years backward.

Club Owners said that it was a majority decision by 16+1 clubs against only 3 clubs that supported the Abridged League hence it was surprised to see the IMC adopting Abridged League against popular decisions thereby deceiving the NFF on the true outcome of the joint meeting.

The Association argued that the ongoing CAF Competitions will end in June 2023 and next edition to commence in September/October 2023 coupled with the fifa World Cup break which will alter many Confederation programmes, hence it asked why the hurry, It queried.

Associating Nigeria Football with an bridged League in this century is a big slap on the country as a great soccer nation in the world, because both Enyimba and other clubs who made Nigeria proud were not champions of Abridged League.
The Association however insisted that Clubs would resist the Abridged League format by shunning the draws slated for 28th December 2022 in Abuja, just as a meeting of the Club Owners has been slated for the same day at Toprank Hotel in Asaba Delta State.

The entire football followers await NFF intervention as the NPFL is expected to kick off in January 8th 2023.

Will 16 teams that voted "NO" not participate in this abridged league? Will it be the league of the 4 teams (Enugu Rangers, Akwa United, Dakkada and Niger Tornadoes) that voted YES ?

I see... 3SC wants the league to broken up by region so they can finally be promoted as one of SW teams. Shame on them. Rivers united has never complained about travelling to Kano or Sokoto to play away games, so why is distance an issue for 3SC?

The scenario as a whole makes both parties look silly to be honest because what was the point of the voting as the organizers were quite set on pushing this Abridged league since their inception, while the club owners sealed their own fate by letting it drag for this long, so the IMC got the NFF's blessing.

But these shenanigans mainly occur around the NFF elections for obvious reasons like in 2018 where there was no NPFL action for half of the year

Naija and absurdities. Club owners who dont own a club. League management of clubs without the clubs. Sponsor pay for a full season, an abridged season is played. And so on snd so forth.

It's pretty easy to talk the talk but when it's time to walk, they've already stumbled. I still don't understand the essence of an "Interim Board" changing the name of the competition when there are far bigger issues that need to be addressed like having youth teams.

NPFL clubs set go on two weeks break

Against the backdrop of the ongoing disagreement between the IMC and the club Owners, there are indications that members-Clubs are set to proceed on a two weeks New year break.

According to a top official of the Club Owners Association, the move is coming on the heels of the unsettled matter of the Abridged league format proposed by the IMC and the straight league format which was overwhelmingly proposed by the club owners.

According to our source who is a Chairman of one of the NPFL Clubs ” We cannot be intimidated into agreeing to an abridged league when majority of us have voted against it”.

” We are aware that the Exco of the club owners have sent a position letter to the NFF, so while we are awaiting for their intervention, we have to release our players to go on new year break”.

He however added that the break is for those of the G-16 clubs and others who might join from the other four teams.

” Yes it is our collective descision, at least the break will afford us the opportunity to discuss with our Governors before the IMC Chairman meets with them at the Governor’s forum as he claimed “.

Meanwhile, our correspondent gathered that only 4 clubs attended the IMC draws held at Sandralia hotel Utako Abuja on Wednesday, as 16 clubs boycotted the event.
