The Nationwide League One has over the years provided an important platform for the best young footballers, offering more competitive games against top-quality opposition, giving players essential experience of international competition and reducing the gap between youth and first-team football.

The 2024 New Year Mega Lottery/NLO didn’t end without new feats and records broken by a few special talents, from the over 10,000 players that took part in the season.

Academy football in the world has a complex relationship with winning, it is rarely seen as a condition for player development but for 14-year-old Patrick Adeoluwanimi Akhidenor-Solanke, his celebration after becoming the youngest player to score a goal this season, demonstrates how much the feat meant to him.

Immensely gifted Nimi is a product of Provazios Sports Academy, owned by his father Segun Solanke. Regardless of his age, the boy wonder captained his team- Olumo United Football Club at the NLO Sagamu Centre and scored against Lasegski FC at the FC Ebedei Stadium.

Segun Solanke talked about how he enrolled Nimi into the academy at the age of four years, and since then, Nimi’s young career has been enjoying tremendous growth and progress.

In 2023, Nimi told The Nation in an interview: “I want to win the Balon d’Or. My dad told me George Weah of Liberia is the only African footballer to have won the Ballon d’Or.”

“Like my idols Messi and Ronaldo, I believe that with more hard work, discipline, perseverance, dedication and focus, I can bring home the honour in the near future,”

The youngster has matched his words with action with the wonder strike against Lasegski FC.

For Nimi’s father, Segun, he’s full of optimism about his prodigy. “In the next five years, we believe he would have become the youngest Nigerian to play for the Super Eagles and also, be playing in one of the top-flight leagues around the world. And particularly, playing for Real Madrid, as the wonder boy from Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the management of the third-tier domestic football league has expressed their happiness at Nimi’s remarkable achievement. They believe it is a testament to their plans to develop Nigerian football by encouraging younger footballers to grow their careers and in the end, earn a good living from it.

Rivers United have already handed first team debuts to 5 members of that squad who won the league. League Topscorer Seyiefa already has 3 goals in 5 NPFL appearances.

Performance Hostel inside the FIFA Goal Project of the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

They are made up of seven players from the NPFL Champions, Rangers International Youth Team, six from the NPFL Runners-up and Remo Stars Youth Team, five from winners of the maiden NPFL U17 Youth League, Rivers United.

The rest are four from Plateau United and Katsina United, two from Lobi Stars and one each from Abia Warriors and Sunshine Stars.

The players were picked from the five zonal qualifiers which held in February at Lafia, Kaduna, Ado Ekiti, Enugu and Port Harcourt as well as from the finals that held from February 25 to March 3 in Benin.

Some of the very outstanding players went on to be promoted to the senior teams of their respective clubs just as some made it to the National U-17 team that narrowly missed qualification for the AFCON U-17 Championship.

Notable amongst the players in camp are the duo of Oscar Ozornwanfor and Seiyefa Jackson of Rivers United, Chimaobi Igwilo of Rangers and Aigbe Bolaji of Remo Stars. The camp will close on August 3 while there are plans to have the players travel to Spain for further training.

In an exhilarating match that left fans on the edge of their seats, Enyimba U19 displayed their dominance as they thrashed Abia Warriors 6-0 in N-Youth League Cup week 18. The star of the evening was none other than Nelson Sule, who put on a stunning performance scoring four out of the six goals for the Young Elephants.

From the start, Enyimba U19 showed their intent to dominate the game. Led by Sule, the team created numerous opportunities and constantly kept the Abia Warriors defense on their toes. The first goal for Enyimba came in the 22nd minute when Sule beautifully finished off a well-crafted team move.

Abia Warriors fought back, but Enyimba’s defense led by Joel Emmanuel and Kelechi Cletus Mbah, stood their ground and denied any chances for Abia Warriors to equalize. The second goal for Enyimba came just in the 22nd minute , with Sule scoring a brilliant solo goal, leaving the Abia Warriors defenders in his wake.

As the second half began, Enyimba showed no signs of slowing down. Their attacking force proved to be too much to handle for Abia Warriors as they continued to put pressure on their opponents’ defense. In the 67th minute, Sule completed his hat-trick with a spectacular finish from a well tamed pass from Samuel Okechukwu.

Samuel Okechukwu scored his own great goal in the 50th minute to make the goals four and beyond the Young Warriors from Umuahia.

With a comfortable lead, Enyimba’s confidence was at an all-time high. In the 77th minute, Sule added to his goal tally with a powerful strike from outside the box, leaving the Abia Warriors goalkeeper with no chance. The crowd erupted in cheers as Sule’s name echoed throughout the stadium.

But the excitement didn’t stop there, as Enyimba continued to dominate the game. In the dying minutes of the match, substitute, Ugonna Nnadi, added to the scoreline in 82nd minute with a clinical finish, sealing Enyimba’s victory with a resounding 6-0 scoreline.

N-Youth League Cup week 18 was undoubtedly a memorable one for Enyimba U19 and their fans. Their impressive performance, led by the young and talented Nelson Sule, not only maintain their fight for the spot at the top of the league table but also showcased their potential to compete at a higher level.

It’s no surprise that Sule’s performance has caught the attention of many, and it’s safe to say that he is a rising star in the making. His four goals, along with a solid team effort, proved that Enyimba U19 is a force to be reckoned with in the N-Youth League.

As Enyimba U19 continues their journey in the N-Youth League, one thing is for sure, they are determined to maintain their winning streak and bring home the ultimate title. With players like Nelson Sule, Kelechi Mbah, Gabtony Okechukwu, Samuel Okechukwu, Umeh Victor, Matthew Eze and co leading the way, Enyimba U19 has proven that they have what it takes to be champions.

The thrashing of Abia Warriors by Enyimba U19 in N-Youth League Cup week 18 was a testament to the team’s talent and determination. Nelson Sule’s outstanding performance and the team’s overall display of skill and unity has undoubtedly left a mark in the minds of fans and opponents alike. As the league progresses, all eyes will be on Enyimba U19 to see if they can maintain their winning streak and emerge as champions.
