What type of mistake? She is supposed to hide her friend, who has probably been there for her, who loves her more than the bigots and homophones of Nigeria; and compromise and values because of Nigerians? People she does not know? They can take their national team spot if they want!!

I went to college in the U.S and a good number of the girls who played basketball or soccer were lesbians. Not all, definitely not even most, but a good number. That means, she probably has a few friends who are gay, friends she sees like sisters (due to the way sportshood is), and she should compromise that for bigots?! LOL.

I blame her parents. A lot of Nigerians are too willing to trade their language and culture in for assimilation in the West. I;m yet to see a Chinese American who doesn’t speak Chinese.

What exactly did she trade lol? She was born in California. She is as American as Barack Obama.

You've got to excuse our Nigerian and British based CE, they believe you're "Nigerian" if you have Nigerian parents so therefore you should be able to speak like a Nigerian and have unflinching loyalty to Nigeria. For the rest of us, she's American of Nigerian heritage. She just as American as blond haired Becky, so expecting her to speak Pidgin when she didn't grow up in Nigeria is just silly. America is NOT like the UK.

I mean don't get me wrong. Your parents are your parents. Any child should take an interest in their parent's culture/history (under normal circumstances). So it would be weird if she had no interest in Nigeria whatsoever.

BUT to say that she would have to be engrossed in the culture is a little daft.

Parents do have a cheat code since they are the guardians of their children. They can make them eat what they want (to an extent, obviously there is a give and take relationship), they can also make decisions such as teaching them multiple languages from a young age, and they can do things like take them on vacations, settle them in whatever country they please etc.

So the best bet for parents is to take such measures from a very young age. Because when they become teenagers and adults, then it boils down entirely to their temperament and devotion if they want to do the hard yards to learn about their heritage. And importantly, nobody (apart from Nigerians) would fault them if they only do the bare minimum.

So no we are not in a position to question the girl. She has already done the bare minimum. If we want to blame anybody, it should be her parents for not using their cheat code. Emphasis on IF.
