People sound like we have won the past 2 AFCONs and he just came in the final game to lose it for us. This is the same team that some here didn't even pick to get out of our group in the group stage.

danfo driver wrote: Thu Feb 15, 2024 9:57 pm I think he is a below average coach and will cost us when he is needed to take action with tactical changes. However, one thing I appreciate about him is his utterances. You will never catch this man telling us to go and learn or that others have better players than us.

I truly wish he was a good coach. But, I guess if he was a good coach, we wouldnt have gotten him in the first place. Sigh.
The bold is a good summary as any about him as a coach. He already cost us the AFCON. Yet people want him to stay.
To cost us more?
Is it his coaching that got us to the finals? I don't think so and don't believe so. The quality of our players got us there. But in the final against Ivory Coast when we met a team of comparative quality we lost to his tactical ineptudeness.
The quality of our players got us to the final, right? But coach's tactical ineptudeness led to our defeat in the final, right? :D Your astute observations attribute success solely to the players when outcomes are favorable, yet allocate blame solely to the coach when results don't align with your expectations. It's a nice perspective, but one that certainly showcases your intelligence. You're such a smart guy  .

Can you compare the first 2 years of CW SE with the last 2 years of Pesa SE?

Players quality can take you that far. Where players quality stop is where the bench tactical onus comes in.
Would you like me to list CW's results at AFCON 1990 ? it took CW 5 years to win the AFCON , we lost to CIV in Abidjan,

Look like you all I want to in the next WC'26. But unlike you all, I don't believe Pesa has the know-how to do it. I hope and pray I am wrong. Enough said.

You dragged CW into this convo. But you need to seat down with someone who experienced CW era, from his beginning to the end and ask them to compare his first 2 years to Pesa's own. Maybe then you will get the point.

you cannot say this. There should be consequences, You want to be like those hoping that ah, e no work, then you come out and beat your chest and claim you were right. I do not accept this statement at all . Time after time, people come out making such a statement.

Go and watch the SE under CW, and watch the opposition, You think the competition in Africa is the same as it was when goalies could still catch the ball after a back pass. We are a much better team, tactically etc compared to the team we had under CW in the early stages. We were very bad defensively and lacked discipline talk less of keeping a shape, you should go are re-watch the 1-1 vs Algeria in 1993

And the crowning of his efforts was 1994/96. yes 1996 Olympic gold medal to me is due to the foundation laid by CW. Why did i say so? I doubt if there are up to 5 players in that 1996 Olympic team that was not previously capped by CW.

Keep living by statistics alone does not tell the whole story. Unlike you i must have watched all these matches you mentioned. In Senegal ask anyone who remembers we lost in the semi-finals(?) to bias officiating. The coaching quality stood out.

Apart from that in all SE matches under CW the was was constantly evolving. And there was progress in quality and tactical play.

Look like you all I want to in the next WC'26. But unlike you all, I don't believe Pesa has the know-how to do it. I hope and pray I am wrong. Enough said.
you cannot say this.

Look. I lived this era. That's unlike you. We needed a draw to qualify and we got the draw. What's your point again?

This exactly the problem with living off Google and basing your facts on stats alone. Let's put it into perspective and let me tell you the story of that competition.

Yes CW and SE lost to Ageria in the opening match of the CAN 1990 hosted by Algeria. But we still made it to the final losing to the same Algerian team by 1-0. Which you missed talking about because it does not suit your narrative.

From losing 5-1 to a team and losing 1-0 in the final of the same competition to the same. And 3 years later coming to draw 1-1 to the same team in the 1994 WC qualifier that matters most must tell you something. What does that tell you about CW and his SE?

It's called progression? We are all witnesses to how CW finally crowned his efforts in 1994.

And let me add, CW took over the SE mid August 1989. The CAN you referred to was in March 1990. That's 7 months into CW tenure. Let me add also that it was an era where getting African players release from their clubs in Europe was a battle. And if I remember correctly Keshi for one was shuttling between Belgium and Algiers during this competition.

You see why I tell you statistics do not tell the whole story?

Google, ke? All these matches i watched live. Algeria the host flogged the crap oout of us twice, your claimed progress, we were rubbish, losing to likes of Ethiopia , etc. The team came of age 5 years later. JP has been coach for less than 18 months, , playing more matches and his results at an AFCON as far as winning are miles ahead of CW

We played 7 matches in CIV won 5 and lost just one. ( 4 goals against)
CW 5 matches in in 1990 won 3 lost 2( chop 6 goals)
CW 5 matches in 1992 Won 4 lost 1 ( chop 5 goals)
CW 5 matches in 1994 Won 3 lost 0( chop 3 goal)

have you noticed the improvements from CW, it took him 3 AFCONS before he won it. even the 1992 team were the favorites to win it

The bottom line is we were very poor and it took CW time to mold the team the way he wanted the team to play. This isn't club football whereby you can buy players left and right to fit your style , it takes time

Let the man build his team , he switched formation during the AFCON and today we have one of the best defense on the continent .

Kai, Azuka is really clutching at straws. One case , he is too defensive and another it is not his coaching that got us there. Yet, i bet it was his coaching that led to the poor resuts before AFCON! Not so? I bet the fact that the team went four games without conceding in open play is also dome miracle and not coaching! Plain ridiculous, if you ask me. Nothing can be so clear as the coaching that led from 4 densive to 5 defensive set. It did not happen by players getting together over the moonlight. Yet, it is that change that suddenly began limiting opponent' opportunities that any careful examiner should have easily noted.

Yeah. Thanks for the correction. Now I remember. Keshi stayed away out of disagreement with CW over direction and call ups. But bought into the project after the competition.

Paseiro was inspired by the formation Brazil adopted during the 2002 World Cup. They had Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho so they played a 3-4-2-1 by bringing in no-namers like Kleberson and Gilberto Silva to man the central midfield with Roberto Carlos and Cafu flying up and down the wings.

Nigeria had several good attacking players - Osihmen, Victor Boniface, Chukwueze, Moffi, Lookman. He resorted to a poor man's midfield duo of Iwobi and Onyeka with Iwobi sitting deep to cover for his weak defensive abilities and Zaidu and Aina to man the wings.

Unfortunately, only one of those players stood out. Aina and that was going forward. Defending the wing Adinkra showed he was no Roberto Carlos or Cafu with almost super human endurance to go forward and get back.

The Ivorian coach saw the Nigerian weakness on both wings and attacked it consistently. Like I have always said having watched Aina for many years, he is no wing back. Defensive midfielder yes but not wing back. Same way Zaidu at best is a DM and no wing back. Iwobi is no playmaker or attacking midfielder, at best he is a wide forward.

Nigeria should go back to a 4-3-3 and search for all the players in this formation:

------- Ajayi ----------- Troost -------- Omeruo --------- Calvin --------

--------- RM ---------------- CM --------------------- LM -----------------

------ Moffi ---------------- Osihmen --------- Lookman -----------------

--------- RM ---------------- CM --------------------- LM -----------------

------ Moffi ---------------- Osihmen --------- Lookman -----------------

Let me tell some of you people on CE, when a coach believes in his team, bobo won't go around setting targets, he said he wanted to win AFCON day one and he was 30 mins away from doing so. however ish happens, I still have my prediction on our SE and this team is just getting started. That AFCON in CIV , opened my eyes, this bobo switched formations and tactics and was able to perform in such a short time. Let the man run his race with our team

Awo, Boni, Wilf, Umar, Orban, etc they all will be back and the team will be stronger.

Westerhof took over in 1989 after we missed the WC and the rest is history
Well said. The underlying issue lies in our society's inclination towards instant gratification in all aspects of life. There's a lack of recognition for the value of perseverance and consistency. This tendency to constantly push for every coach to be fire even when the team is improving is primarily driven by self-serving motives, be it personal financial gain or biased motives.
It is also a virtue to correct course early and make tough decisions early. Peseiro has been the manager for over a year and he handled the AFCON as if he had just been drafted in 3 weeks to the tournament.

He picked only 25 players for a tournament that was played in 30 degree Celsius heat on the average. Of the 25 he picked, he stuck to a small core. He failed to consider Yusuf for his initial list but then he threw him into the first team in the opening game.

To his credit, he brought defensive discipline to the team and deserved to get to the final. But nothing from what I've seen from him, or his utterances suggest that we will not be having a more desperate coaching discussion after the June WCQs.

In 2013, after being initialky sceptical of Keshi, I was relaxed after our opening draws against Burkina Faso and Zambia because I could see a good balance between attack and defence except for the madness in the dying minutes against Burkina Faso. In 2019, I was not a big fan of Rohr’s game but I thought the team could kick on from there as we came up with some good attacking play. I'm struggling to see this with Peseiro.

However, one thing I appreciate about him is his utterances. You will never catch this man telling us to go and learn or that others have better players than us.

I truly wish he was a good coach. But, I guess if he was a good coach, we wouldnt have gotten him in the first place. Sigh.

enjoy early CW

This exactly the problem with living off Google and basing your facts on stats alone. Let's put it into perspective and let me tell you the story of that competition.

Yes CW and SE lost to Ageria in the opening match of the CAN 1990 hosted by Algeria. But we still made it to the final losing to the same Algerian team by 1-0. Which you missed talking about because it does not suit your naration.

Let's than a year of CW tenure. Let me add also that it was an era where getting African players released from their clubs in Europe was a battle.

Thank you. This was only JPs first afcon. And let’s remember that there’s something called “generational talent” which each country has every now again but very rarely do you have so many in the same team at the same time:
Yekini
Amokachi
Finidi
Oliseh
Okocha
Amuneke
There are players that world pundits still talk about 30 years later. Westerhof had a stacked deck
