The Battle of Sydney: NIGERIA vs AUSTRALIA 2000
Olympics 2000 - This intense, slightly violent match between the two nations.
Does anyone remember this match and what took place?

Re: The Battle of Sydney: NIGERIA vs AUSTRALIA 2000
when we normally make the Olympics, we end up beefing the SE with u23s to replenish the National team . I think the last time we made the Olympics was in 2016 chei
92 Olympics( failed) 94 qualified for the WC( AFCON Champs)
Olympic football 96 , qualified for 1998 WC
Olympic football 2000 , qualified for 2002 WC
Failed to qualify for 2004 Olympics , Failed to qualify for 2006 WC
2012 Olympics failed but qualified for 2014 WC ( AFCON champs)
Olympics football 2008 , Qualified for 2010 WC
Rio 2016 Qualified WC 2018
2020 and 2024 missed both (missed 2022 WC , 2026 WC ?????)

Australia has never been a match for both our men and women ...in Australia

For my sceptical Nigerian Friends : Pessimism is great because you are either always right or pleasantly surprised.

Re: The Battle of Sydney: NIGERIA vs AUSTRALIA 2000
It was a fantastic match.
I was watching Cameroon - the eventual champions - play in Brisbane at the time, but I taped the game on Australia’s Channel 7 and watched it when I got home.
This was basically the Australian Golden Generation which came closest of any team to beating Italy at the 2006 World Cup. The midfield of Emmerton, Grella, Bresciano and Culina was Champions League level.
For Nigeria, Gbenga Okunowo and Celestine Babayaro were world class full-backs, but the keeper and central defence were dodgy.
The midfield was useless apart from the mediocre Garba Lawal. Up front there was the height of Victor Agali, the running of Yakubu and the acceleration of Julius Aghahowa.
Nigeria basically got lucky and beat Australia with two breakaway goals.
In the next round they were slaughtered by a mediocre Chile team.
The message should have been that the next generation was not good enough and that the country needed to persist with the generation of not just Okocha and Kanu but also Ikpeba and Babangida and Finidi.
But no. They were almost all dumped by Chief Onigbinde before the 2002 World Cup, and the same players who weren’t good enough at the Olympics were sent to finish bottom of the group at the World Cup instead.
