This is a U20 tournament for the WAFU Cup - and nothing else.delisyomie don wrote: ↑Wed Jun 04, 2025 3:23 pmIt is for the AFCON under-21 for the 2027 qualifier. Is it an under-16 qualifier that was mistakenly put under 20, or is it just a friendly? Because WAFU just played last year for the AFCON under 20 in April, which we just came 3rd in, and a proper World Cup for under 21 is coming this September.???
They've already played one major competition this year and have the WC in September. The AFCON (snr) was moved to an odd year because having a major tournament in the same year as the World Cup was deemed draining on players, and it negatively affected African teams at the World Cup. Players need time to recharge mentally and physically after a high-intensity tournament. Two competitions in one year before the U20 WC is too much.Gotti wrote: ↑Thu Jun 05, 2025 2:55 amThis is a U20 tournament for the WAFU Cup - and nothing else.delisyomie don wrote: ↑Wed Jun 04, 2025 3:23 pmIt is for the AFCON under-21 for the 2027 qualifier. The WAFU B (just as the WAFU A) U20 tournament was/is used as qualifiers for the U20 AFCON championship for the group of West African nations that Nigeria belongs to (as per CAF grouping). This tournament is the first of its kind and is open to nations in both WAFU groups. It is NOT being used as a qualifier for anything but rather is a championship of its own accord.
Should be good preparation for the Flying Eagles towards the U20 WC.
First, it’s a “friendly” invitational tournament (all 16 WAFU nations were invited, but only 13 are participating).Orion wrote: ↑Thu Jun 05, 2025 9:34 amThey've already played one major competition this year and have the WC in September.
