Re: 2025 WAFCON SQUAD
Not a bad list overall. Frankly, much better than I had feared (especially given the secret and delay surrounding the list), but…
There are still some questions. Where is GIFT MONDAY?!
I can understand Uche Kanu missing because she’s been on the injury shelf for a long time and is only getting back to speed, but we are getting Fran Ordega (who deserves her flowers for her PAST services but frankly past her SF’s sell-by date) when this would’ve been the perfect opportunity to pass the torch to a new generation of talent such as EDNA IMADE (16 goals in Spain’s La Liga) AND JOY OMEWA (22 goals in 24 games and Danish League’s Player of the Season).
Meanwhile, let’s all pray Chiamaka Nnadozie doesn’t get injured, because no disrespect intend but Oluehi (like Ordega) is past her SF days and frankly no longer international-class (I see she’s now been listed with a new club in Saudi Arabia after being released by her previous Saudi employers), while Udoka Unachukwu is iffy at best and arguably not even the undisputed top choice at Nasarawa Amazons (I believe Shukurat Bakare starts about as many club games).
GOOD LUCK LADIES!!

PS: Also realize we were battling with Malawi (really? SMH) for Chima Okafor, but she’s untested at this level. Anyway, I think the WAFCON limit is 23 players, so you might effectively be an ‘alternate’ at this point.

Gift was taken out injured in Washington Spirit's last game. Injury can be the only explanation.Gotti wrote: ↑Fri Jun 20, 2025 11:33 am Not a bad list overall. Frankly, much better than I had feared (especially given the secret and delay surrounding the list), but…

She played the entirety of the game against Portland (and I know, because I kept waiting for her possible substitution so that I can switch the channel

Re: SUPER FALCONS’ WAFCON 2025 (2024) SQUAD
The composition of this team is good, I will score the team selection -80/100. I believe the team can make the Semis at worst, all I need the coach to do is to use the next few weeks to build the team chemistry. I also like the fact that Miracle Usani was selected with the 2 other home-grown ladies - hopefully, this would spur the other ladies to improve their gameplay. Overall, I wish the coach and the ladies a wonderful and successful tournament. Go girls.

Meet Chioma Okafor: The Malawi-born star ready to fly Nigeria’s colours at the WAFCON in Morocco

In a Nigerian squad filled with familiar names and established stars, one name stood out like a bolt from the blue when the Super Falcons’ WAFCON squad was announced — Chioma Okafor.
Born and raised in Malawi to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother, 20-year-old Okafor has never played for Nigeria. In fact, she’s never featured for any national side.
But next month in Morocco, that changes — she’ll be donning the famous green-and-white jersey at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and her story is one of talent, perseverance, and dual heritage.
Okafor grew up playing football on the dusty pitches of Malawi, where opportunities for young girls in the game were scarce. But that didn’t stop her.
At Berkshire School in Massachusetts, she lit up the high school football scene, guiding her team to playoff appearances and catching the attention of college scouts.
That led to a scholarship at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where she quickly became a standout performer.
In 2022, Okafor was named to both the All-BIG EAST Second Team and the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team. A year later, she earned national recognition as an NSCAA Third Team All-American — with her standout qualities being her pace, intelligent movement, and clinical finishing.
Chioma Okafor, Nigeria’s new goalscoring Princess
Naturally, her talent sparked international interest. The Football Association of Malawi had their eyes on her, even extending a call-up for friendly matches earlier this year. But academic commitments kept her from joining the Scorchers.
Still, the tug of Nigeria — her father’s homeland — proved stronger.
Nigeria already boast the attacking talents of the legendary Asisat Oshoala, Ifeoma Onumonu, and Rinsola Babajide, but Okafor will be the team's secret weapon against African foes.

She's expected to join the team’s Lisbon training camp ahead of friendlies against Portugal and Ghana, a crucial tune-up before WAFCON kicks off.
For Okafor, this is more than just a debut. It’s a full-circle moment. From backyard football in Malawi to top-tier college soccer in the US — and now, a potential debut on Africa’s grandest stage — Chioma Okafor is ready to write a new chapter, wearing the green of Nigeria with pride.

Her journey took a significant turn in 2019 when she moved to the United States for school.“I just loved the game,” she once said. “There weren’t many girls playing, but I never let that stop me.”

For Nigeria, it’s a timely acquisition. The Super Falcons — nine-time African champions — are aiming to reclaim their crown, and Okafor could offer a breath of fresh air up front.“Following discussions with her parents and formal communication from the Nigeria Football Federation, Chioma has confirmed her commitment to play for Nigeria,” Malawi’s FA said in a gracious statement.

I read recently about this player's decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria from Malawi(?). I understand that she was recruited by the Nigerian Federation. How good is she, really?

Still a green horn on the international stage. But, there might be an upswing with her.
Just feel sad for Malawi, who had invested in her and made her the poster child of their women's national team and the future.

Re: 2025 WAFCON SQUAD
Agree with your points listed.
The likes of Ordega and Oluehi are way past their 'sell by' date and should never have been on this list.
Oshoala is also in that space, as she is no longer that impact player that we once knew.
Thought the NFF botched the opportunity to have engaged Edna and Joy, as that would have provided the much needed bite the frontline could have benefited from. Having Ijamilusi (certainly, not in the class of Edna and Joy) and Okafor (definitely a greenhorn on the international stage) is a downgrade for the team upfront, not to mention the unexplained absence of Monday Gift who is having a great season with the Washington Spirit ((4 goals in 9 appearances - very high strike-rate).
The inclusion of Chioma Okafor is a head scratcher for me...For some reason, I decided to watch most of her highlights and her Big East game against Georgetown yesterday (after the Malawi FA announced that after a meeting with her parents, the family had decided she would pitch her tent with Nigeria. Now we know why!). I felt she was underwhelming. She was the 2024 Big East Offensive player of the year, though, which is highly commendable.
She has had some good games and some in which she underwhelmed - it is that lack of consistency that worries me. I also feel sad that Malawi was snubbed after they invested so much in her. Oh well, according to the late Keshi... 'Das football!'

Re: SUPER FALCONS’ WAFCON 2025 (2024) SQUAD
But Nigeria is LOADED!! Think of exceptional players that didn't make the squad like Okwuchukwu, you mentioned, Gift Monday, Suliet Abideen, Onyenezide, Sabastine, Imuran, Joy Omewa, Akekoromi Janet etc. I'm salivating a future forward line of Okafor & Okwuchukwu. I'm expecting us to reclaim this crown, and we are likely to dominate Africa as usual for the forseeable future.Gotti wrote: ↑Fri Jun 20, 2025 7:47 pmInjured, she’s been out for a while…TonyTheTigerKiller wrote: ↑Fri Jun 20, 2025 7:24 pm What happened to Chiamaka Okwuchukwu? Ordega and Oluchi are past their selling date. Oshuola is the next one that shouldn’t be on the team. What is it with local coaches picking local players that are not even starters on their club? We see that with the SE and not with the Falcons if what you wrote is true about Udoka. I don’t follow our female league.

KPOM. That was what occupied my mind when I learned of this. There is even a video where she spoke in local Malawian language.

This is a perfect demonstration of what drives decisions on international representation in football: CAREER PROSPECTS.
She has a greater chance of achieving her dreams with Nigeria than with Malawi, despite all the love they’ve shown her.
It’s nothing to do with how she loves one country over another, or grew up in the culture, her friends, her coaches.
Foul.
It’s simply about where she sees her bread best buttered as a professional athlete.
The day Nigeria has a football profile bigger than England, or Spain or Germany or Italy is the day you will find many of their top top players with dual nationality going the Okafor route.

Not sure why Edna Imade isn't on the squad. Do we know if NFF has even reached out to her? At the pace NFF/Madugu are moving she will end up playing for Spain or Morroco.

Kpom! That’s why I don’t have an issue with the so called innit boys that chose England over us. The only one that pisses me off is Tosin with his age and inyanga/teasing. I was also upset that Keshi took an old Shola Ameobi to the WC to sit on the bench over taking some young player.Damunk wrote: ↑Sat Jun 21, 2025 1:33 am This is a perfect demonstration of what drives decisions on international representation in football: CAREER PROSPECTS.
