Summer transfers - African related
It's the silly season, so let's talk moves. A few transfers/rumours that have caught the eye this summer.
Michael Essien (Lyon to ??). Possibly the biggest transfer of the summer, if it goes through. If the tabloids are to be believed, this guy will end up being Africa's most expensive export, following Drogba's transfer from last year. Chelsea tabled GPB 26 million, Lyon told them to get lost. Well, I would too, knowing that Abramovich makes GPB 11 million a day!!
Sammy Kuffour (Bayern to Roma)...from championship team to relegation fodder. Guess he's just going to end his footballing career on a $@#% team where he's guaranteed a starting position. So long as his feud with the Black Stars brass is settled, I'm happy. Very strong defender best remembered for his pump your fist on the field act in '99 when Bayern squandered a goal lead to Man Utd in '99 CL final
John Obi Mikel (Lyn Oslo to ??)... I signed with Man Utd, but I wanna go to Chelsea. United pressured me to sign for them, I wanna I wanna I wanna go to Chelsea. You catch the drift. Only 18, but loads of talent.
Yaks Aiyegbeni (Pompey to Boro)...I was AWOL when the Super Eagles played a crucial WC qualifier vs Rwanda. Oh yeah, I had malaria, yup malaria. He then had his work permit denied because he had not played the requisite 75% games for the NT. k-a-r-m-a.
He was awarded the paper on appeal. I like this guy, as he is your strong pacy striker who will work well with Hasselbaink in the Boro attack. He is in my Premiership All Africa XI
Benni McCarthy (Porto to Blackburn)...eeek, why Benni, why?? Top goalscorer for Portuguese outfit 2 years running; also won CL with Mourinho in 2004 and now wants to play on below mid-table sh!te team.
Mamadou Niang (Strasbourg to Marseille)...Is Marseille squad Senegal-lite?Habib Beye (Senegal FOY) and Sylvain Ndiaye will be his team mates
Stephen Makinwa (Atalanta to Inter)..with Vieri given his walking papers, this young Nigerian joins his fellow countryman Obafemi Martins on the Nerazzurri list. Dunno much about his guy, but what I have read is very positive. Adriano--Martins--Makinwa. Could be deadly.
Aruna Dindane (Anderlecht to Lens)..this guy has probably won every accolade in the Belgian league. I would like to see him do well in Ligue 1, which is a little bit more taxing than that 5th rate league
Shabani Nonda (Monaco to Roma)..he was Monaco's top scorer two seasons ago. After coming back from injury, couldn't hold down a regular spot alongside Sheyi Adebayor in the Monaco strike force. Going to Roma on a free
Bonaventure Kalou (Auxerre to PSG)..expect him to be booed quite a bit after joining a rival side. Scored winning goal in the French League Cup final

Collins Mbesuma (Zambian) to Bolton
'Hurricane' Could Blow In At Bolton
Tue 05 Jul, 2:09 PM
Bolton boss Sam Allardyce is chasing one of the hottest properties in African football.
Collins Mbesuma scored 35 goals for South African champions Kaizer Chiefs last season, including 25 of the club's haul of 55 in the league en route to winning the title for the second successive year.
The 21-year-old Zambian, nicknamed 'The Hurricane', is currently waiting on a visa to visit England and hopefully conduct talks next week over a move to the Reebok Stadium.
Allardyce currently heads the queue for Mbesuma, whose form guaranteed him the Player of the Year and Golden Boot awards in South Africa, as a host of clubs are understood to have expressed an interest.
But Allardyce confirmed to bwfc.co.uk: "Collins Mbesuma is a player who would interest us. He is a prolific goalscorer who has had a fantastic season in South Africa."
The Chiefs are resigned to losing their best player, but feel they cannot stand in his way.
Team manager Bobby Motaung confirmed: "He is the best I have come across in terms of a striker.
"He is a targetman who is very strong, very intelligent and very difficult to mark.
"He is not the type of player who comes into a game for a few minutes or 10 minutes. He is someone you have to keep an eye on for 90 minutes.
"I know he will do a good job for Bolton if they sign him because he will have no trouble coping with the demands of the Premiership. He will deliver.
"I would have loved to have kept him for another year or two, but we appreciate this is an opportunity for the young man, one he must take with both hands."

tfco, a few observations...
Michael Essien is good, but not that good. Only Chelsea will pay anything above 20 million for him.
Stephen Makinwa was not bought to replace Vieri. Vieri left because with the emergence of Martins and Adriano, he would have had even less playing time than last season, besides he had a heavy contract and one year left on it. Good business decision. Nothing to do with Makinwa who, if this transfer comes through, will join a POOL of substitute strikers on the bench.
Roma is not relegation "fodder", whatever that means. They were second just one season back, and still have a good backbone to the team.
McCarthy's move is from a side which has peaked to one which at least has some upside. Besides it's the EPL. More money, more exposure, language and the bright lights of.. er.. Blackburn

I must say, I've followed Collins Mbesuma's rise in prowess on Supersport of late, the boy is good. His left foot and footie brain reminds me of Kalusha Bwalya in his glory days. A very dangerous player indeed.27 wrote:'Hurricane' Could Blow In At Bolton
