Is this the best dutch side ever?

1974 World Cup Team. Neeskens, Krol, Van Hanegam, Jansen, Suubier, Rep, Rijsbergen, Renesbrink, Haan Jongboed, Cruyff.
This extraordinary collection of talented footballers set the world on fire for a few brief weeks in the summer of 1974. They captured the imagination of a generation of fans in a way that no team, before or after, have matched. They played football in a way we hadn't seen before, with skill, strength, intelligence and attitude merged together into a mixture that was uniquely theirs. They didn't actually win the World Cup, heaven knows why, but they created a set of memories that have lasted a generation now, and will continue undimmed for a long while to come.

Thankx Sir V...
.... for the memories this evokes, both personally and otherwise. A truly extraordinary team, much like Brazil was to be years later in 1982.

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

That 1988 side was a great team, but this side of 1974 will take them drink garri.

It was not a good team. Once Careca pulled out with injury, it struggled. That Serginiho was just not good enough as a striker.Bomaye wrote:

There were some good players in it like Eder, Zico and Socrates but they were missing Careca. Look at the difference he made in 1986 when he came back.

Fair enough to single out the two weak links (Serginho and the golie, Waldeir Perriez). However, that team played, by far, better soccer than most teams in your list.

Although the 82 Brazilian team played before I was born, i still know this much from watching some of their matches. That guy Serginho is the greatest wastepipe ever. THe way he played at the world cup, he won't be able to make made the Ghana's squad of today even though Ghana lacks attackers. Brazile would have been better off playing one man down.
Two things killed them, a basket goalie and Serginho.

IMHO, man for man, the 1988 team was better with the exception of Muhren on the left. lets see:Sir V wrote:My broda, okjazz wrote:The 1988 team with Van Basten, Rijkaard, Gullit, Koeman, Van Breukelen was the best ever.

Breukelen, van Aerle, Rijkaard, Koemen, van Tigglen, Vanenburg, Wouters, Erwin Koemen, Muhren, Gullit, van Basten.

I have seen the future, and it is dirty. Dirty Leeds.
I raised the alarm at work today. The midgets were furious.
I have some new agoraphobic anorexic neighbors; they must have skeletons in their closet.

That 1982 Brazilian team played some beautiful soccer. They were not in the same class of the Dutch 1974 or the 1970 Brazil team. However, if they had a half way decent goalie and a replacement for Serginho, they would have destroyed all teams enroute lifting the trophy. (I have never seen any striker fluff chances the way Serginho did.)
Wenger's modern day philosophy was born from Brazil 82.
Arsenal on its best day strives to entertain like that team.

This wAyo as usual is selective in his reasoning...going by your logic, the 86 Argentina team is not good either cos without Maradona they would've struggled.Ayo Akinfe wrote:It was not a good team. The Italian teams of 82 and 90 would've struggled without Paolo Rossi and Salvatore Schillachi respectively.
The 1974 Dutch team would've struggled without Cryuff
The 1994 Brazil team would've struggled without Romario
The 2002 Brazil team would've struggled without Ronaldo
The 1990 German team would've struggled without Mattheus
The 1986 French team would've struggled without Platini
The 1970 Brazil team would've struggled without Pele
If you're selecting your team based on accomplishment then that's cool but the French, Italian and Dutch teams of 86, 90 and 88 respectively didn't win the WC and the so that nullifies that logic.
If you're eliminating the 82 team cos of Serginho then you need to eliminate the 90 Italian team cos of Vialli.
As good as that 88 Dutch team was, I would really hesitate in putting them that high up in the list cos they struggled at the WC, crashing out in the second round without winning one single game.
