The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has released the top three nominees for the 2006 African Player of the Year Award.
Chelsea's Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba and Ghana midfielder Michael Essien both make the final three.
Three times winner and holder of the 2005 award Barcelona's Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o is the final candidate.
The winner will be announced from the Caf Awards ceremony, which is set to be held in Accra, Ghana on 1 March 2007.
Nwankwo Kanu and Mohammed Aboutraika missed out after being included in the initial five-man shortlist.

I think Eto would have won this if not for the injury. Before then he won the ECL with Barcelona and was at the very top of the Spanish league. However, Drogba has to be the guy now when you consider his importance to Ivory Coast's march to the ANC final, and the fact that he was at the WC while Eto'oo was home, his position as top scorer of the EPL by the end of 2006. Michael Essien will finish second ahead of Eto'o most due to his WC and then his importance to Chelsea and ofcourse Eto'o absence from the limelight due to injury. Thus this is what I predict (in order):
1. Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast & Chelsea)
2. Michael Essien (Ghana & Chelsea)
3. Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon & Barcelona)
1. Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast & Chelsea)
2. Michael Essien (Ghana & Chelsea)
3. Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon & Barcelona)
The difficulties of statistical thinking describes a puzzling limitation of our mind: our excessive confidence in what we believe we know, and our apparent inability to acknowledge the full extent of our ignorance and the uncertainty of the world we live in. We are prone to overestimate how much we understand about the world and to underestimate the role of chance in events -- Daniel Kahneman (2011), Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics

It should go to Didier Drogba this time around.
"How can someone qualify his country for the World Cup and then, because he lost a match, everyone is saying they should sack him. Please allow the man to do his work. Nobody is perfect, but if someone can qualify his country for the World Cup, then he deserves some respect. I even heard that it is the second time he has qualified Nigeria for the World Cup. That is huge". - French legend Alain Giresse on Nigeria's Shuaibu Amodu, 2010
How? When was the last time we [West African] won it?African Star wrote:West Africa rules!!!!!
If not for injury a central African [Eto'o] would have won it again for 2006.
