NEPA fines 43 legislators for tampering with meters

THE National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) may have sanctioned 43 members of the National Assembly for allegedly tampering with the meters in their homes at Apo legislative quarters, a source has said.

According to the source, for this "unbecoming act" ostensibly done to avoid payment of their bills, NEPA has fined each of the culprits N10,000.

Pre-payment meters by use of smart cards, similar to GSM recharging cards, were installed in the legislators' quarters last February to enable consumers pay appropriately for what they consume and make settlement of bills easy.

It was also learnt that 460 of such meters were installed on the orders from the Presidency, following the implementation of the monetisation policy.

Prior to the installation of the meters, bills were paid centrally by the Nation Assembly.

NEPA raised more than N430,000 after each of the culprits was fined the minimum rate of N10,000, for tampering with the meters.

"On our routine check, we discovered that the meters had been tampered with. They were no longer functioning but the houses had electricity", the source said, adding: "In the first month of the installation of the meters, NEPA realised about N2 million. In March, we realised N7 million. But this tempering with the meters will deprive NEPA of revenue. The offence is criminal. It is a malpractice which can be handled by laws on economic sabotage".

According to the source, anyone who tampers with the meters shall pay a penalty which is determined by how long the tampering has lasted.

"The minimum fine is N10,000. The legislators promptly paid the fine because they are gentlemen and respected members of the public. We no longer have problem with them.

"We advised them to avoid such acts in future. They have seen the danger in such acts. Everybody needs enlightenment and once they are sensitised, we no longer have problems", it added.

It said the Presidency had also ordered that the meters be installed in the homes of ministers, but they were yet to be installed because the stock had been depleted.

"As at now, we do not have enough. We have placed order and they are coming in batches and we are sure we will soon have enough to go round", the source said.

"Pre-paid meters will be introduced nation-wide but we are moving gradually", he said, adding that consumers with the old meters would not be required to pay for the pre-paid ones, "we will just withdraw the old ones and install the new ones".

"Those who do not have any meter will be required to pay for the new ones but the charges have not been fixed", the source said.

There should be jail time for that. IMHO the fine is too small
