Re: IM NOT ARROGANT LIKE LYLES
...yes, everyone in Africa knows what the word "arrogant" is.
We are all well educated, we take education to the nth degree, reason we have too many well schooled but poor administrators

It's how you use, what for, what intent, in what manner, with prejudice or not.

Beyond Lyles’ arrogance, it is confounding that the IOC has not taken a stand about competing in the Olympics while infected with Covid

Cheers.

But in this case you have concluded that he does not fully understand the context of the word ‘arrogant’ as he used it.mcal wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 4:51 pm...look, it doesn't matter how much education we have, and especially when we are not living in said countries for a long time, in Africa we say same thing with different connotation, with no prejudice btw.
Do you know him?
I put it to you that from my interaction with people from that corridor of Africa, their command of the English on average is better than ours.
And the average Nigerian understands the meaning and use of the word ‘arrogant’.
Un fact, we have even brought back the obsolete noun, ‘arrogancy’.

One thing is obvious. Thinking that you have a better command of the English language than people from Botswana is quite arrogant.jette1 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2024 12:56 amI think you might be up to something there; you know English isnt our first LANGUAGE after all and, often the meanings we assign to words we speak aren't the true meanings especially for someone from Botswana. He probably wont use arrogant if he realized its rather offensive.Donzman wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2024 11:23 pm I think he misspoke. What he meant to say was they he is not loud and boisterous like Lyles, which is true.
I actively root against Lyles, but have to admit that he has brought some excitement back to track and field since Bolt retired. All sprinters must appreciate that.
I am a Nigerian with a pretty good grasp of the English language and “arrogant” is exactly how I would describe Noah Lyles
Cheers.

A man uses a fairly common English word, and your conclusion is that he doesn’t know what it means? Why? Because ‘he’s African’ …that’s your answer. And when those of us with interaction with Motswana tell you different, you still insist on your earlier baseless assumption.
