the guy won a medal last olympics and I don't think he is even based

Nigerians don't take sport seriously. Na so so to eat Amala and drink Star. The number of pot bellies in our dear country are a serious health concern.

There was one of our male athletes who seemed very chubby indeed. When he was hitting his tubby before the race I had my doubts. They were justified when he came last in that heat.

Does anyone remember when Nigeria used to perform really well in weight lifting? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that was as a result of a Yugoslavian program where they sent coaches to Nigeria. All our track & field glory came when US schools used to recruit Nigerians for athletics. Chidi Imoh, Innocent Egbunike, Mary Onyali , Falilat Ogunkoya were all NCAA athletes before they represented Nigeria.

Nigeria is no Olympic powerhouse and will not become one anytime soon unless we invest massively in sports which is unlikely. We are still good in weightlifting, Maryam Usman (She won Bronze at the last World Championships) nearly got Bronze at this Olympics to add to the Silver we won in 2000. Oliver Orok, Ironbar Bassey and the likes never won any Olympic medal, but Naija can really do well in Women sports if we invest more.

The foreign coaches and sports scholarships that you mentioned were a result of our planning.

Words can not describe just how unbelievable it is that Naija couldnt even win a single medal at the Olympics. There is simply no excuse for this travesty.

Olympic success is not rocket science.

It requires organization and investment in specific sport programs for kids, teens and young adults.

This investment and organization can be public (China) or private (USA)

Smaller countries with fewer resources (poorer governments, or smaller middle classes to support private OCs) focus on a small set of sports (Jamaica: athletics, Cuba: boxing and field, etc).

We KNOW that the Nigerian Government will not get its act together any time soon in terms of Sport.

How far the private option?

We accuse government of madness for doing the same thing (shoddy prep) over and over and expecting different result, and we are correct.
We are also mad if we expect a different result.
