You know Suarez needs to sharpen his rabbit teeth from time to time.

He did bite the defender.
I think he will get suspended, which will lead to Uruguay's elimination.

That red card changed the match in Uruguay's favor, but whats done is done.

BTW, remember what I said earlier about taking out Balo? You can understand the reasoning due to his yellow, but given the scoreline at the end, it might have cost Italy their qualification for the 16 round.
It was not the taking of balotelli that cost them the match, it was the bone headed decision of a player to get himself carded, the foul was bad, players need to be held responsible for this sort of behaviour that end of costing the team. They took out balotelli to avoid a red, then another that went on to earn himself a red, why not leave the ball alone?

so 3 groups are done. only 1 of 5 European teams in those groups is continuing.

IN: Holland
OUT: Spain, Italy, England, Croatia

and people want to come and tell me Africans don't deserve their spots. Apparently Europeans only play well in continental Europe. (ok this is not totally true). But playing anywhere in continental Europe is a big advantage (culture, huge fan base, weather, ref bias) for Europeans. Out in South America, those guys are toothless.

I was willing to give the idi*t the benefit of doubt based on his achievements and conduct with Liverpool this season. He is just a rabid dog. He should receive 2 yrs ban, at least.

Abegi! No excuses joor! They've stunk up the place - and need to have their allocations reduced!

I actually would take 2 away, giving 1 each to Africa and Asia. Just on the basis of fairer representation.

The weather is indeed an excuse. I don't buy that.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if a tier 1 European wins either.

You can't say that there is a clear South American tier 1 challenger. Brazil is not looking very strong. Argentina definitely isn't. Uruguay seemed to be the rising dark horse, but Suarez is probably going to get suspended.

In the spirit of continental rivalry, who is going to upend Germany, Holland, and France?

:)

By the way...I agree with posters who cite how North + South America will challenges Europe going forward. This is going to be interesting, as CONCACAF is coming of age.

Cheers, Mate

Bros, you've played the game, so you know better than anyone that in high pressure matches, players can be over exuberant and hot headed. Ask Zizou…

My I am just saying there was not brutal intent in the Italian foul that lead to the sending off. It was a bad attempt at the ball that could have done damage, but it didn't deserve a straight red in a very close game.

The referee certainly made himself the deciding factor in this game.

One more thing, Italy badly needed Barlotelli's presence at the end of the game. If Pandelli can tell the future, I am not sure he would have made the same decision.

Big bite small bite Suarez is a player. Good win Uruguay. I really need the big gunz out of this WC as soon as possible. If not for USA's brain fart Portugal would have been out and Germany would be waiting to get kicked out!

Imagine Italy, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Holland out by the second round?

Concacaf is not going to do nada. It is always going to be US and Mexico and one of the other ones going through a purple patch. US will play with a lot of heart and will go far. Mexico will play better when closer to home. And the third country is always going to be hit or miss.

Best thing Sepp Blatter ever did was to move the WC around even though UEFA hates it. If it had continued on that Europe / Latin America rotation, only traditional powers would have continued going far.

No Charlie it is not about playing at a high level, the truth be told one of the things you learn as you go higher in this game is exposure and maturity. He lost the ball, there are some clever things he could still do without bagging a red. He should know the reason why Balotelli was sacrificed and be more careful, seriously I am hurting that Italy is out, but to tell you the truth they walked right into that one.

As a neutral which the ref was, that was a straight red, leg was high, studs was right into the skin of the opponent, he left the ref with no choice there. If he did not others would be accusing him of shirking his responsibility. The important thing here is did he make the right call? The lesser point would should he be lenient? Which begs the question by waving the law aside who benefits and what does that say about his neutrality. Italy were not up to it, it was evident the way they were set up, two strikers not on the same wavelength, one not up to the mark, the other too busy thinking about himself than the game.

Kolinzo, I share your faith about the US.

But I think the tier 1 teams are going to reassert themselves in the 2nd round.

Holland, Brazil, and Germany are prepared for knockout round football. That's why this next game is crucial for the US. I hope we can get the tie.

That said, I think the best teams I have seen so far are Holland...and perhaps an Uruguay with Suarez...but Suarez's goose is cooked. Not a chance he won't get suspended.
