Within the context of defensive systems, I think the potentials of the counerattack are grossly untapped...

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
The Barca attacking philosophy is about redifining the time space dynamic. It seeks constant circulation of man and ball until the red sea parts a la Moses!
In otherwords, its about he overload, the sudden emergence of ball and man in a critical undefended zone. One pass leads to another, each defined by movement to create new lanes.
In defence, it is applied in high pressing; the sudden overload to constrain time and space for the opponent.
But what if we manipulated space by systematic changing of positioning and thus shape of the defensive unit? In otherwords, like Floyd Mayweather, influence the decision whether to jab, hook or uppercut b/4 it ever took place.
Afterall, a pass is a decision; a run occurs in space....

Interesting... but not sure how this would work in practice. Can you think of a scenario?txj wrote:The Barca attacking philosophy is about redifining the time space dynamic. It seeks constant circulation of man and ball until the red sea parts a la Moses!

At its core, it is based on a superior ability to read opposing systems of play and affect it before it happens. In a way it is like the 'coverage sack' in American football. You manipulate the quarterback by redifining what he sees downfield...
It effectively means a drastic rethinking of rigid positions in football, in which case we speak about roles and not positions. Each role defined and redifined based on the phase of play and the opposition...
I think football can be played by a team composed entirely of midfielders as outfield players-DMs, CMs, LM, RM, WM.
Why MFs?
The flexibility it gives you.
Think about it for a minute: why is the fale 9 successful?
Cus CDs have no fixed target to mark...

Go on...
Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
The one constant in football is that the dimensions of the field is finite. The active territory is even less, and the defensive area further limited.
The passing lanes are defined.
They are defined by the notion of a defender FIXED in space, which allows the forwards to take new positions and such redifine the lanes. Changing this dynamic puts unfamiliar constraints on the player with the ball looking to create, or the striker attempting to create space...It challenges the attacking game by removing the rigidity therein.
In turn training regimes revolve around scenario building round zones of the field and the specific phase of play.
The outfield players, all MFs, are selected to maximize flexibility. No longer the big center back, or the burly striker, each cumbersome, FIXED in space...

Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
In this scenario, I believe the potentials of the counterattack to be vastly under exploited.
It begins with the understanding that the counter is not simply what happens in transitionary periods, when you allow the opponent possession and then counter punch.
How so?
Possession, can be a platform for the counter punch.
The strike of a cobra is devastating. Yet it never occurs as a counter strike. Instead it coils itself like a spring recoiling, b/4 the lightning strike.
Possession is the recoil...

Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
So in effect, total football, position and responsibility defined by the position of the ball. A starting formation is a must and in as much as the regimental centrehalf has his forward thinking limitations, he excels within his regiment. More so than any midfielder would. Even if one were to play 10 midfielders, by default that selection would comprise those better at tackling, some better at some passing, others better at running with the ball and those better at finishing. So in effect, you're recreating the present paradigm.
Please detail the starting formation, as loosely as this may be applied, a starting position is need in order for one to draw the circle and total football is very much a circular phenomenon that exists in a constant state of clockwise/counter-clockwise progressions.
In addition to the starting formation can you define the type of midfielder for each of these transient starting positions, perhaps giving an example too.
Cheers.

BeniTx, the audience is waiting!
Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
Its not so much the formation as the roles. But I understand; old habits die hard, if at all!!!
I would start with the 1-3-1-3-3
The '1' in front of the base trio is like the 'safety' in American football. He is the 'eye' who sees everythin. He plays on both sides of the base trio, in front of them or behind them, depending on the phase of play...His name is Frank Rikjaard!
In the NP phase, the opponent with the ball is challenged by a triangle, the rest of the defensive 'shape' adjusts accordingly and continuously behind this, the key focus being the limitation of the effect of the diagonal pass, and the sudden overload of defensive players, 'the pirrhanias' around the opponent with the ball, at the moment of maximum vulnerability...

Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
@BeniTx, before we proceed, are the above shapes of similar orientation to that of the Mayweather Thesis?
The Barca shape is thrown in for want of modernity.

Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
The Mayweather theorem is reflected in the dynamic structural formulation behind the initial triangle...
It is not the base formation
Rather it is the consolidation of shape in incremental formulations and challenges the opponent to constantly reset, thus escalating the lateral over the vertical pass...

Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
And is the 3-1-3-3 speculated, similar to that of Van Gaal's Ajax/Cruyff's Barca?
Re: @ COACH: Lets talk Tactics!
The second schemata is more appropriate.
It can be a 3-1-3-3 or a 3-1-2-1-3
In each case, the '1' is the difference maker...

The difference is in the philosophy in the NP phase...
And of course the choice of players
The idea is to define roles and not positions...

Does the incompatibility of your preferred motif not then contradict the argument that, this fluid, Mayweatheresque formation isn't the ideal.
