Lionel Messi is set to leave FC Barcelona after his club said a new contract "cannot happen".

In a statement, the club said: "Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).

"As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.

"FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life."

La Liga has announced an agreement with CVC Partners which will see €2.7 billion injected into Spanish football to be mostly spent by clubs at all levels to improve infrastructure and off-field business areas.

A new company is to be formed which will control all of La Liga’s business activities — and CVC Partners will have a 10 per cent share in this joint-venture.

La Liga say they will retain control of all sporting and competitive areas but the money and expertise of CVC will allow them to improve innovation and competitiveness throughout Spanish football.

The announcement is of an “agreement in principle” and will have to be ratified by La Liga’s members — the 42 Primera and Segunda Division clubs
