The VAR technology in itself is objective. The application of VAR is subjective. Another ref using the technology could have reviewed this and award the goal.

In this same game, a Liverpool player could have been sent off for dangerous play but even after a VAR review, the player did not even get a yellow card.

The bottom of van Dijk's armpit was also considered but it was not the most advanced part of his body. The 2 lines are drawn with the most advanced part of each player's body that can legally score. For van Djik, that was his right foot as marked by the red line in the pic, and for Lukaku, it was the bottom of his armpit, as marked by the yellow line.

The application of VAR is subjective in cases like the dangerous play you mentioned and in cases like Matip's disallowed goal where van Djik was adjudged to have interfered with play. But when it comes to offside calls, VAR is an objective determinator. Two lines are drawn and the call makes itself.

.... But the lines drawn are not parallel to the grass line. The grass lines are supposed to run parallel to the width of the field, and to the goal line. This can also aid the assistant referees in determining if a player is in an offside position.

At this point, you guys are arguing that your naked eyes beat the Hawk Eye technology. Please read this article in its entirety and understand how Hawk-Eye’s virtual offside line technology works. Your naked eye looking at a 2D image cannot beat a technology that uses multiple calibrated cameras to adjudicate an offside decision.

The VAR decision to determine if Mane was onside in the ongoing Liverpool vs WHU game shows exactly how the bottom of the armpit as a legal scoring body part comes into play. It was the most advanced body part for both Mane and the WHU defender and Mane's was adjudicated to be just mere fractions behind Dawson's.
