Which country has historically produced the most fearsome strikers?

Post by Scipio Africanus »

I can't decide between Argentina, Brazil and the Netherlands.

Argentina have produced Crespo, Batistuta, Caniggia, Balbo, Higuain(Ok, not him)

Netherlands have also given us great strikers like Van Basten, Bergkamp, Van Persie, Van Nistelrooy etc.

Brazil have given us Pele, Bebeto, Careca, Romario, Ronaldo, Neymar etc

I don’t know. I think maybe Argentina should be higher on that list. They have produced some ice cold ❄️ clinical finishers over the years

Batistuta, Caniggia are the only two that really stand out with Sergio Agüero honorable mention

An interesting question if you ask about the African country.

Nigeria and Cameroun.

North Africans tend to play some kind of false 9.

Not really sure actually.

The really scary things are that:

1) Ronaldo, Romario, Bebeto, and Jardel overlapped and were available to Brazil 🇧🇷 at the same time.

2) For 3 seasons in a row, Mario Jardel was the top scorer in Europe and averaged more than a goal a game for his club, but could not get into Brazil's team because he was in the queue behind Ronaldo, Romario, Bebeto and others.

😳

Back in the mid-late 1990s, Jardel would have been the first choice striker for any other country in the world except Argentina 🇦🇷 (who had Batistuta).

My picks in order of consistency,

Brazil
Germany
Argentina
Italy
England and Holland tied for fifth.

Lineker(England) Golden boot winner at Mexico 86, Alan Shearer, Michael Owen ...
Rossi(Italian) - Golden boot winner at Espana '82 , Schillaci(Italian). - Golden boot winner at Italia '90. Then you have strikers like Vieri, Del Piero, even Baggio that dumped us out of USA '94.
Dutch strikers - Marco Van Basten, Robin Van Persie, Ruud Van Nistelrooij, Patrick Kluivert, Dennis Bergkamp ..

As much as I don't like Argentina, you have to give them credit.

I'll include all their players that are known for scoring lots of goals.

Messi, Maradona, Batistuta, Caniggia, Balbo, Aguero, Crespo, and Kempes (at his peak between '74 and '81).

They slowly won me over after the last WC. The sheer quality of the goals they scored(against Mexico, Poland, Australia, Netherlands, Croatia and France). Accuracy, timing and cold-blooded finishing. (The goals Canniggia scored against us in 1994, the goal that Burruchaga scored to win Argentina the WC etc). They really know how to strike a ball. Confidence in striking the ball helps in PK shootouts. They have been involved in 7 PK shootouts at the WC and only lost once(to the baba of PK shootouts, Germany).

I have always feared German Strikers even the not so prolific ones...but nowadays they are struggling

These guys deserve respect: Gerd Mueller, Seller, Rumenigge, Klinsmann, Podolski, Klose, Muller (in his prime)

France is a special case. Their goals can come from anywhere and everywhere. When they won their first WC, no French striker scored in the entirety of the knockout rounds, not even in the final. Blanc and Thuram, both defenders, scored the goals that got them to the final. In the final it was two midfielders, Zidane and Petit, that scored to win them the cup.

Their 3 notable strikers before Mbappe, Giroud, Benzema and Henry, were late bloomers

Until the era of Mbappe …

I didn't watch Muller and Uwe Seeler. Rummenigge was OK. Klinsmann is the most fearsome German striker I have ever watched. He was good in the air, with his left, with his right and he had SPEED! Klose was very good in the air, but average otherwise.

USA, few better strikers in the business than Gorgeous George Foreman and Earnie Shavers. The latter is believed to have been the hardest hitter in history.
