Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have been awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Caf has announced.

The three nations under the East Africa Pamoja beat South Africans Zambia and Botswana as well as Senegal as revealed by Caf President Patrice Motsepe at the Executive meeting held in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday.

It is the first time the Afcon finals will be host in the Cecafa region since 1976 when Ethiopia hosted the tournament which Egypt won.

Meanwhile, 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco won the bid to host the 2025 edition following the withdraw of Algeria.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, also known as the 2027 AFCON or CAN 2027, is scheduled to be the 36th edition of the now bicentennial African international association football tournament organized by CAF.

This edition of the tournament will be the first-ever edition to be hosted by three different countries Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, and also the first that will be organized in East Africa or more specifically CECAFA region after 51 years since it was last hosted by Ethiopia in 1976, this came after CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe has announced that the competition will be zonal oriented so it can be hosted by all the geographic zones of Africa (UNAF, WAFU, UNIFFAC, CECAFA, and COSAFA)

On 7 April 2023, a decision was taken by CAF that the hosts for the 2025 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be chosen at the same day. They also announced that there will be four bids for the 2027 edition.[1]

Tanzania president instructs construction of two stadiums after winning Afcon 2027 hosting rights

by ISMAEL KIYONGA
SEPTEMBER 28, 2023

There was jubilation all over East Africa after the region under three nations – Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania through the Pamoja bid won the hosting rights for Afcon 2027.

It will be the first time since 1976 that the tournament returns to the Cecafa region and also the first of its kind that will be hosted by three countries.

The Pamoja bid beat Botswana, Egypt and Senegal’s bids but that is only the start of the huge work as outlined by East African leaders in reaction to the big news.

Tanzania President, Her Excellency Samia Suluhu rejoiced but immediately instructed construction of two standard stadiums.

“We thank God that we have managed to host the biggest football championship in Africa (AFCON2027), collaborating with Kenya and Uganda,” she posted on X.

Tunamshukuru Mwenyezi Mungu tumefanikiwa kuwa wenyeji wa michuano mikubwa ya soka Afrika (AFCON2027), tukishirikiana na Kenya na Uganda. “I congratulate all of you who participated to ensure that our country gets this wonderful opportunity. I instruct the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports to ensure that we make good preparations, including the completion on time and with high quality, of two new modern sports fields in Arusha and Dodoma.”

Her Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Kaguta Museveni looked beyond just football and stated that hosting Afcon will promote the countries’ economies through tourism.

“I received good news that our joint bid with Kenya and Tanzania to host the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2027 was successful. I thank the organizers for putting up a good case for East Africa.

“This will promote our countries and positively impact our economies, especially the tourism sector.”

Kenya deputy President Rigathi Gachagua believes the effort by the leaders to show readiness by the heads of state played a big role in the success of the bid.

“It is quite exhilarating to receive the news that the joint bid by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has this afternoon been accepted by the Confederation of African Football.

“The Pamoja Bid fronted by H.E President Williams Ruto and the other Heads of State was one of its kind as it underscored our readiness to work together to ensure the competition comes to East Africa for the first time in its history.”

Meanwhile, Morocco won the bid to host Afcon 2025 that was recently supposed to be hosted by Guinea.

Negativity around Pamoja Afcon 2027 bid uncalled for
Written by MARK NAMANYAOctober 4, 2023

Last week in Cairo, the CAF executive committee voted to award the hosting rights of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

It was a historic decision because it is the first time the tournament will be played in three countries. Immediately after CAF’s announcement, social media became awash with negative connotations around an Afcon in the region.

Many Ugandans and Kenyans, in particular, have chosen to throw disdain at the idea of their countries hosting Africa’s biggest football competition.

Normally, countries should be celebrating the successful conclusion of a tiresome process that involves preparation of a bid, inspections from officials from the continental governing body, securing of government guarantees and back-and-forth lobbying in the days and hours leading up to the vote.

Instead, the full-scale contempt shows beggars’ belief. The sentiments on most social media sites create the impression that CAF committed a horrendous mistake in picking East Africa over Algeria, Nigeria and Benin, and Senegal.

A simple glance at recent soccer events shows that this disparagement comes with the territory. In 2004, when South Africa was picked to host the Fifa World Cup, the entire Western media attempted to convince the world that Fifa had committed the greatest sin in awarding their showpiece event to Nelson Mandela’s country.

We were told that South Africa’s crime rates were going to endanger World Cup tourists. We were told that the country’s lack of a first-class transport system was going to make it a nightmare tournament for the 500,000 visitors in the winter of June and July. There was a particular article in The Guardian newspaper by a journalist called Louise Taylor titled ‘Why going to South Africa for the World Cup terrifies me’ that highlighted the so-called dangers associated with a World Cup in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and the other host cities of the 2010 edition.

To cut the story short, the SA World Cup happened. And it was a huge success. As one American fan I met in Rustenburg put it, “They warned me about the water in South Africa but when I drank it, it tasted better than what we take back home.”

Four years later in 2014, there was a lot of nonsense that was said and written about the tournament in Brazil. There was selective coverage of sit-down strikes by workers on construction sites, the dengue fever, the Zika virus and the country’s crime rate.

Regardless, Brazil 2014 happened. Memories from that tournament are not the pre-tournament negativity that was propagated by sections of groups who had a hideous motive. What we remember are memorable games like Germany crushing Brazil 7-1 in that famous semi-final at Estadio Minerao in Belo Horizonte.

We were told similar tales on why Russia 2018 would be a wrong World Cup to attend. Last year, the world nearly united in arms to tear down everything Qatar had put in to host the first World Cup in the Middle East. When it ended, it was hailed as one of the best tournaments ever because of being a one-city World Cup.

Cameroon, who hosted the last Afcon, were also criticized by forces inside and outside the country. That didn’t stop the country from building legacy stadiums and staging a successful tournament.

As Danny Jordaan, the CEO of the SA 2010 Fifa World Cup, said one year after the tournament, “the best thing for us was the criticism that was directed to our organizational efforts because people arrived in our country with extremely low expectations and departed South Africa impressed with what we showed them.”

Therein lies the opportunity for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania come Afcon 2027. That negativity could be the best thing to happen for the local organising committee of Pamoja 2027.

See how E. Africans got together three countries, run a lean campaign and have started a potentially difficult project.

Some countries cannot even coordinate this well, within their own countries let alone with another one. But to do it with three? That is remarkable!

Pamoja bid: Uganda ran cost-effective campaign
Written by MARK NAMANYAOctober 8, 2023

It is one week since the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights were granted to the East Africa region under the Pamoja Bid in Cairo by CAF Executive Committee.

The development has caused a combination of excitement, delirium, anticipation and condescension in equal measure in football quarters and sections of the population. But as the dust settles, the reality is that Uganda has now embarked on multifaceted preparations to stage, along with neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, what will be the biggest sports tournament on the soil of each of the three countries.

Uganda’s bidding committee, which was steered by Fufa president Moses Magogo, operated a cost-effective campaign with total expenses within considerable range.

“We did all the work we did in the Pamoja bid with no government vote,” Rogers Byamukama, a member of the Pamoja Bid Team, told The Observer.

He couldn’t offer a definitive figure on the amount expended. Byamukama noted that internally they debated whether or not to use a consultant to prepare the bid document, before agreeing to put together their best brains in the Ugandan Bid Team to work on the proposal, which would later be shared and joined with that of Kenya and Tanzania.

“We were careful not to pursue the bidding at a high cost because we didn’t have the money, yet we wanted to convince the Caf executive that we were ready, along with our East African brothers and sisters.

“We actually operated on monies from the federation coffers and tried to get the most we could in how we lobbied for our position together with our counterparts.”

The bid team consisted of Fufa Executive Committee members Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, Ronnie Kalema, Rogers Byamukama, Rogers Mulindwa, first vice president Fufa president Justus Mugisha and second vice president Darius Mugoye.

The other two members were Decolas Kizza and Sumaya Kiwanuka, who are both employees of the federation. The nine-man team made a series of flights to Cairo, where the Caf headquarters are and to both Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda also had to host inspection teams from Caf who flew into the country along with the Bid teams from Kenya and Tanzania.

There was also a retreat, involving the Bid Committee teams of all three countries, at Silver Springs hotel in Kampala that meticulously analyzed the status of each country’s preparedness ahead of the decisive date of September 27.

It ought to be noted that the Pamoja Bid was vetted as a one-country bid and any one country’s weakness would have affected the other two East African nations.

Uganda promised to construct two stadiums in Hoima and Lira in the bidding document as well as guarantees of an improved transport system. More hotels – of Caf standards - will also have to be erected to be in time for the tournament that will last just under one month in 2027.
