RIP 🪦 to Sir Bobby. His passing is an iconic watershed because:

1) Only one other member of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team is still alive (Sir Geoff Hurst). The Grim Reaper has been picking them off one by one (including Bobby’s brother Jack who died 3 years ago) for the last 30 years. The first member of that squad to die was ironically the captain Bobby Moore (who died in 1993) and it took 30 years to whittle it down to one surviving member.

2) Bobby Charlton was also the last surviving member of “The Busby Babes” from that tragic Munich Air Disaster in 1958.

3) Charlton's death means that only Denis Law is alive from Manchester United's "Holy Trinity" of George Best, Bobby Charlton, and Denis Law - all of whom won the Ballon D'or and were part of its first ever European Cup winning team in 1968.

I think people are sleeping on Sir Robert’s legacy because he played in the pre-YouTube and social media era before everything became RonaldoMessified.

Sir Bobby won:

🏆 🥇
World Cup
Ballon D’or
European Cup
English league title
FA Cup
British championship

AND he was England’s 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 all time record goal scorer (a record that stood for 45 years) and Manchester United’s all time record goal scorer (a record that stood for 44 years).

His success streak is amazing:

1954 - FA Youth Cup winner
1955 - FA Youth Cup winner
1956 - FA Youth Cup winner
1957 - English League champion
1958 - nearly dies in a plane ✈️ crash during the Munich air disaster, but survived his injuries and resumed his career after recovering and several of his team mates dying

1962 - FA Cup winner
1965 - English League champion
1966 - World Cup winner
1966 - World Cup Golden Ball winner
1966 - English Footballer of the Year
1967 - Ballon D’or winner
1967 - English League winner
1968 - European Cup (Champions League) winner

He scored over 200 goals  from midfield! (and he was not the designated penalty taker) Dozens of those goals were absolute howitzers blasted from 30 yards out into the top corner.

Even though the game has continued to evolve over the decades, records such as Sir Bobby’s cannot be sniffed at.
Pele is the GOAT, but Bobby Charlton played in the same era and Pele always showed him a lot of respect.

Charlton played in the same era as Eusebio, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Di Stéfano, Pele, Gerd Muller, Best, and Law - yet still won the Ballon D'or. Beckenbauer said that Charlton was the best player in the world when England won the World Cup in 1966. 🏆

Incredible to think that the Manchester United team of his era had 3 Ballon D'or winners in it simultaneously (and the 3 of them won it in the space of 4 years).

He is also in a very elite group of footballers who have won the World Cup, European Cup/Champions League, and Ballon D’or.
