RIP to Sir Bobby. His passing is an iconic watershed because:

1) Only one other member of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team is still alive (Sir Geoff Hurst). The Grim Reaper has been picking them off one by one (including Bobby’s brother Jack who died 3 years ago) for the last 30 years. The first member of that squad to die was ironically the captain Bobby Moore (who died in 1993) and it took 30 years to whittle it down to one surviving member.

2) Bobby Charlton was also the last surviving member of “The Busby Babes” from that tragic Munich Air Disaster in 1958.

3) Charlton's death means that only Denis Law is alive from Manchester United's "Holy Trinity" of George Best, Bobby Charlton, and Denis Law - all of whom won the Ballon D'or and were part of its first ever European Cup winning team in 1968.

Charlton played in the same era as Eusebio, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Di Stéfano, Pele, Gerd Muller, Best, and Law - yet still won the Ballon D'or. Beckenbauer said that Charlton was the best player in the world when England won the World Cup in 1966.

Incredible to think that the Manchester United team of his era had 3 Ballon D'or winners in it simultaneously (and the 3 of them won it in the space of 4 years).
