Eddie Nketiah to play for Ghana
... now that he knows he'll never make the England team
.. Will he face Naija in Brentford?
Eddie Nketiah: “I’m open to representing Ghana at the international level”
Crystal Palace striker Eddie Nketiah has said that, he is open to switching allegiance to play for the senior national team of Ghana. The 25-year-old’s recent declaration is a big shift from the previous rejection of several overtures to represent the four-time African champions.
Speaking on The Beautiful Game podcast, Nketiah revealed that he is ready to wear the red, yellow and green shirt of the West African nation.
"When I was younger, representing England was an option after progressing through the youth system. But if Ghana invites me, then I'll be there," he said.
A product of the England youth system, Nketiah holds the record as the all-time leading scorer for the England U-21 side, netting 16 goals in 17 appearances. He earned a senior call-up in 2023 for matches against Scotland and Ukraine but failed to make the matchday squad. He has struggled to break through to the Three Lions’ squad since then.
Nketiah joined Crystal Palace after struggling to command a regular shirt at Arsenal. He has had loan spells at Leeds United in the EFL Championship before joining Palace.
Nketiah, born in London to Ghanaian parents, remains eligible to play for Ghana under FIFA regulations as he has not yet made a competitive senior appearance for England. Nketiah will look to take advantage to feature for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup should they qualify.
He has made 25 appearances scoring just a goal with one assist this season for Crystal Palace.
