set Piece and crosses

Post by NationsCup »

Firstly, I think that we need to be happy that we got the points and the game was well handled against Egypt.

The issue of crosses, corners is an age long problem of the SE. i think that this is an issue better discussed in a seperate
thread.

We don't do too well with dead ball situations in Major tournament. i don't think we should single out a single player. Whats your take pls and way forward?

Simon usually takes better corners but he was seethe ball back to Nigeria v Egypt. Striking the ball well is actually a problem with most of our players, very few know how to strike the well, it's whybwe have so many wild attempts at goal. I don't know if it can be improved in the short term.

So many corners and dead ball situations at major tournaments with zero end product.

Does the team practice? The reporters are more concerned with what the players ate rather than asking them footballing questions. All practice sessions shown have been running around the pitch & pigy in the middle. I haven’t seen any equipment used as a wall for dead ball specialist to practice free kicks

Nwakali seems to be our best dead ball specialist and there was a video posted of them practicing FK which Akpeyi couldn't hold and a player scored from a rebound. I thought our CK's were relatively decent, our players were able to get their heads to the ball and we did cause problems. Even the play that Omeruo hurt himself on was a good CK that landed at Iheanacho's feet his touch let him down like it had done on countless other occasions. Also, I felt we defended their corners relatively well.

As professional footballers that’s something they really should practice at elementary level to be honest so either they are nervously shooting and hoping they get lucky or they just don’t shoot much at club level.

Thanks for your observation, when I mentioned this in a different thread, I was accused of being against local coaches. We had all these training equipment when Rohr was in charge, what happened to them. We are only training with cones, running around and playing Team A against Team B.

Maybe we should try short corners. It will give us the ball near their 18 yard box where we are dangerous instead of wasting it on a cross that usually goes nowhere

...in the space of two weeks, did these players suddenly forget everything Rohr taught them over the last six years? Let's not forget that though this is an African setup, many of the Nigerian players either matured their game outside Africa or were actually born overseas. It's not helpful to simply echo here the mindless stereotypes some foreign commentators spew out.

I guess their coaches in Europe have been doing a particularly poor job at preparing them on that?

Post your video of their full practices so we can see what else they are working on. I gave the example we’ve been privileged to see, I await your full practice videos!

GOOD POINT

These players spend months in intense training with their European club coaches and only days with their national coaches yet their alleged shortcomings are blamed on their national coaches.

:rotf: :rotf: Some times, I laugh reading this stuff. Really funny. Figure that these players spend weeks, months and years with their Euro clubs and weeks with Gernot Rohr BUT now it is the one week with Eguavoen that leads guys to wonder why the players are not delivering corner kicks or free kicks accurately. Wonders shall never cease.

Jeez, Prof!
You are not being fair here at all!

Failed crosses, inaccurate passes, poor first touch etc were all somehow heaped on Rohr, routinely!.
I’ve even asked the question here, wondering aloud whether it was Rohr that “instructed” Simon to cross poorly or for players not to find their teammates.
You never read all that? It was so common how could you not see it?

I can’t believe you are just seeing it now and believe the questions are only being asked of Eguavon.
It’s why they say people see what they want to see. :rotf:

I said this yesterday on another thread in response to a point made by maceo4:

maceo4 wrote: Wed Jan 12, 2022 7:28 pm I was fine with what I saw from Awoniyi, I don't think we have a striker problem. I do think we have a crossing problem as the whole team (sans Aina) doesn't seem to know how to put in a proper cross, something they should work on...
I really don’t know what excuses a professional footballer and most particularly a winger would have for not being able to make a decent cross.
I mean, it’s a basic skill and nothing more so what exactly is the problem?
Nerves? Excitement?
Surely it can’t be lack of technique especially since they’re successfully doing it consistently at club level.
It’s baffling.
Simon’s crosses were traveling as far as the opposite corner flag! :rotf:
It is a problem that has always baffled everyone and it is such a fundamental requirement for a professional footballer Indo not know how a coach can be blamed for it, whether Rohr or Eguavon or even club coaches for that matter!

It is taught from primary school!

Is it that our players are not paying enough attention at the club level to assist the national team or they just don't care?

It did not get any better under the last coach. Check last WC stats.

You just know the outcome of our set piece.

Is Simon crossing with his weaker foot?

Do we need a coach? You can't teach what you're not good at.

solutions, please.

I remember watching BBC in the 1990s, showing Barcelona training and focusing on Ronald Koeman's ability on free-kicks.
The Dutchman stayed behind in training for at least 2 hours to practice.
The lessons learnt is twofold:-
1. The player must be dedicated
2. The right equipment has to be available( his teammates are not going to stay behind forming a wall!)

Corner kicks was also a problem under Rohr tenure or are we quick to forget?

The excuse for Rohr was the SE camp is not the place to learn such arts, players ought to have learnt corner kicks before getting to the SE. Now it's suddenly the fault of local coaches handling the SE. Please!

Is it the responsibility of the local coach or the NFF to provide training equipment for the national team?
If you know the answer to the question them you will know where the blame lies.
