SIASIA: EAGLES SHOULD AVOID MY MISTAKE

Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia tells SAB OSUJI that coach Stephen Keshi and his players should prepare well for Liberia so that Nigeria will not fail to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

In the coming weeks, Super Eagles will know if they will play in the 2013 Africa Nations Cup finals in South Africa or not. That of course depends on the outcome of the crucial return leg qualifying game against Liberia. As a former national team mate to the handler, what’s your take on the game?

Well, the main thing about it is that the team will have to prepare very well. You and I are Nigerians and we are all living witnesses to what happened to us the last time against Guinea, precisely in 2011 that made us not to go to the Nations Cup finals in Gabon/Equatorial Guinea. So, that’s a lesson for us all. A lesson that we know as things stand now with 2-2 away, we can still go to the Nations Cup even if we play 0-0 here. They should get this right in their minds even before and during the game. They shouldn’t concede any goal, not at all. Nigeria must be at the next Nations Cup, otherwise, there will be chaos in the country because the people are yet to fully get over the heart-break of missing out from the 2012 Nations Cup finals.

You were the man on the hot-seat of the Eagles coaching crew when the team failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Nations Cup. How has that affected your coaching career?

Well, it actually affected me the same way it did to every Nigerian. It’s not just about me alone because I’m only an individual but the country as a whole. It touched everybody, everywhere I go, it was fire him, fire him as if crucifying me was the solution. If firing me was the solution to the problem, I think we will still not be where we are by now. It was a sad moment which touched everybody, but we are all praying and hoping that it doesn’t happen again and that the Super Eagles will qualify for the next Nations Cup in South Africa.

As a former Nigeria international and national team coach, what benefit do you think Nigerian clubs and indeed football stand to gain from the just concluded Soccerex Seminar?

In the first place, I think it’s one of the great things to have happened to our football. Once in a while, there is need for people to come together, share ideas and interact on the game as well as fostering cordial relationship between clubs and administrators. Like the concept of the Soccerex, such gathering opens avenues for business contacts and all that especially as related to the game. At least, most of our (football) administrators have had the opportunity to come around and see what we have been talking about developing the game in Nigeria and see how the game is being run, managed and packaged worldwide to attract investors. You know Soccerex has been involved in such ventures for a long while now, and I think those who attended the seminar will hopefully go back home and implement what they have learnt so as to move our football forward. It won’t be nice for any one to come for such event and fails to put what he has learnt into practice.

Overall, it’s a nice gathering, it will be a good start for us towards getting a good league because if you are not a club side, you cannot buy players from another country to come and play for your national team. If you have a good league, that’s actually where you will groom the players that will play for your national team. I think this is a good innovation and it is such that I think can benefit the country if we agree to put into practice what we have learnt from it.

No doubt, there have been several seminars in the past where key issues relating to football development had been highlighted. The problem has always been the will to implement what we learnt from such seminars. Do you think things would change this time around?

Yes, I think it is possible but we have to separate politics from sports though in Nigeria, it has not really been easy. It’s one step at a time. If government can hand off sports and allow administrators to handle it that will be a good start for us as a nation. The public sector will have to know how they will invest in it and get something out of their investment. If football is a big business investment in Europe, for instance the English Premiership, why can’t we do the same thing here in Nigeria? It’s a long journey, but let’s give ourselves a new beginning.

Some state governors have already told their clubs to be prepared to start fending for themselves. Could this be a step forward towards the much talked about privatization of football in Nigeria?

Yes, I think it is because if the clubs are to fend for themselves, the private sector is there to help them. But I think before they can do that effectively and successfully too, they need some financial grants from the (state governments) that can help them take off effectively without running into problems. This is because it could take them a while before they can get the kind of money from private investors that could sustain them. It will be better for the government to give them something like a loan to start off and give them some time to pay that loan. This, to my mind, will be the turning point.

Finally coach, what have you been involved in since then, especially as you are not currently with any club side as coach?

I have been around, actively involved with my pet-project which is SIAONE Academy. We have been trying to give the youths a good beginning in their careers, while we wait for another opportunity anywhere.
Thank you coach for sharing your thought with us…

You are welcome as always.

even Siasia with all his pride and ego acknowledged his failures in good spirit and as a true Nigerian moved on...while some folks continue to kill themselves over somebody that is solidly behind Keshi

This i usually where Nigerian sports journalists fail our football.

The least they could've done was ask him proper questions!
Form is temporary; Class is Permanent!
Liverpool, European Champions 2005.

We watched this very boring video, 500 times, of Sacchi doing defensive drills, using sticks and without the ball, with Maldini, Baresi and Albertini. We used to think before then that if the other players are better, you have to lose. After that we learned anything is possible – you can beat better teams by using tactics." Jurgen Klopp

Most likely they asked many questions that he might have answered off the record. They can ask and he can decline to answer. If they publish 'rubbish' then they will NEVER have the opportunity to speak with him again. So tact is required.

Not sure what diplomacy it requires to ask questions about technical decisions he made in a match or managerial decisions he made off the field...
