Barcelona in van Nistelrooy talks

BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) - Barcelona president Joan Laporta has reportedly met Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy's agent for informal talks.

Spanish media reported Tuesday Laporta met Rodger Linse to talk numbers. The Dutch striker recently extended his contract at United for four years to 2008.

Manchester are said to want 64 million euros for their leading scorer whom they bought for 19 millions pounds (29 million euros) from PSV Eindhoven in 2001.

And van Nistelrooy's 6 million euro wages might be too much for Barcelona, who have been trying to off-load van Nistelrooy's compatriot atrick Kluivert for the last year because of his wages.

Kluivert, in his sixth season at Barcelona, was forced to take a two million euros pay cut last July. His salary is now believed to be around five million euros a year.

Barcelona, who were outbid by Real Madrid for David Beckham last year, are also interested in the Juventus striker David Trazeguet but have told the Turin club they will not go beyond 15 million euros for the France striker.

Linse, who lives in Catalonia, said his meeting with Laporta was a chat over a cup of coffee.

Reports in the British press said Chelsea were considering a 50 million pound (76 million euro) bid for Barcelona's Brazil World Cup winner Ronaldinho whom Barcelona snatched from under the noses of Manchester from Paris St Germain last year.

Van Nistelrooy going nowhere say United
Tue 13 Apr, 2:13 PM

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United rubbished reports that star striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was about to quit the club for Barcelona after the Dutchman's agent met the Spanish club's president Joan Laporta.

Van Nistelrooy, who has scored 26 goals so far this season, recently signed a contract keeping him at Old Trafford until 2008.

And a United spokesman insisted: "The talk that Ruud might be leaving this summer is rubbish.

"Why would the club have gone to such great efforts to negotiate a new contract if he wasn't going to stay?"

Spanish media reported Tuesday that Laporta had met agent Rodger Linse to talk numbers amid suggestions that United wanted 64 million euros for their leading scorer whom they bought for 19 millions pounds (29 million euros) from PSV Eindhoven in 2001.

However, van Nistelrooy, 27, who has gone on to score 106 goals in less than three full seasons at Old Trafford, has frequently thanked United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for signing him after an initial move foundered when the striker sustained a severe knee injury while still at PSV.

And even Linse himself admitted a move was a long-shot.

"There is only a possibility when the two clubs reach an agreement and until that happens, there is no sense in talking about it," said Linse.

"He has four years left at United and I can only act and speak to the player if his club give me permission and at the moment, I don't have that.

"I don't want to say that it's impossible because I'm not Manchester United, nor do I represent them.

"But I think it's a little complicated, although I insist this does not mean that van Nistelrooy doesn't want to go to Barca."

Even if he did want to move, van Nistelrooy's six million euro salary might be too much for Barcelona, who have been trying to off-load his compatriot Patrick Kluivert for the last year because of his wages.

Kluivert, in his sixth season at Barcelona, was forced to take a two million euros pay cut last July. His salary is now believed to be around five million euros a year.

Barcelona, who were outbid by Real Madrid for van Nistelrooy's former Manchester United team-mate David Beckham last year, are also interested in the Juventus striker David Trazeguet.

But they have told the Turin club they will not go beyond 15 million euros for the France forward.

Linse, who lives in the Catalonia region of Spain which includes Barcelona, said his meeting with Laporta was a chat over a cup of coffee.

Meanwhile reports in the British press said Chelsea were considering a 50 million pound (76 million euro) bid for Barcelona's Brazil World Cup winner Ronaldinho whom Barcelona snatched from under the noses of United from Paris St Germain last year.

   this will be disaster for Rijkaard, mark my word  RVN will be a distracted influence in team. I think the Dutch contingent in the team is alright for now

Trezguet is a stone cold scorer. He would tear up LaLiga. He is worth more that 15MM Euro. Especially if you are actually seriously discssing RVN at 64MM Euro. For those prices, RVN is not worth it at all.

Either Barcelona is broke or they don't realy want Trezguet.
"Jose Mourinho favoured directness and used to throw Robert Huth or John Terry up front when Chelsea were chasing the game, a ploy associated with the industrial era of English football management."
