Decline Started in 2002
Yup , the events that followed after we won our first "golden bronze" in 2002, have brought us to this point. That was when "scapegoating" and insanity were officially installed as our National pastime.
A few months to the beginning of the 2002 world Cup we fired our coach and removed some of our best players calling them "tired legs" . Since 2002, the following have coached the SE:
Amodu/Keshi
Onigbinde
Chukwu
Eguavoen
Berti Vogts
James Peters
Amodu
LagerBack
That's 8 coaching tenures in 8 years. Along the way we also destroyed the international careers of some of our best and brightest, some of who could still be helping the National team today.
I believe Finidi, Oliseh and Agali were banished for being tired legs in 2002. I don't think it would be a stretch to say Finidi and Oliseh were the best the SE has ever seen at their respective positions.
Oliseh is only 36 years old and had he continued playing after 2002 might have been the steel/experience in our midfield at this World Cup and the past 3 ANCs, Finidi would have worked to teach people like Osaze and Obasi some of the finer skills a winger needs.
As things stand people are already calling for Kaita's head, Yakubu has been our national scapegoat for a long time, and several segments of the population have players they never want to see play for the SE again..
In all likelihood, Lagerback will leave after the WC, Siasia will be appointed, and once Nigeria loses a match, will promptly be fired..Yakubu/Osaze/Obase depending on who is the villan of the day will be banned fromt he SE, and the cycle will start all over again
At some point this madness has to stop..only a mad person can expect different results from doing the same ting over and over. We need some continuity in our football, give the coach a chance to fail and learn from his lessons, show some appreciation for the selfless service to the Nation by our players, and most of all fans should support the team not tear it down..
FWIW I think Nigeria may have the worst fans on the planet, especially if we use CE as a sampling. In a group of hundreds of self-acclaimed internet coaches, fewer than 10 managed to make the trip to go support the SE at the World Cup

I agree.
The decline started in 2002 when some of our greatest ever players (Oliseh, Finidi, Babangida) were kicked out prematurely to satisfy NFA nobodies.
We then compounded that error by appointing a succession of under-qualified coaches to supervise a team which lacked the leadership those veterans would give, and where substandard players like Olofinjana plugged the gaps left by the star players' absence. We then persisted with Kanu for over half a decade after he was no longer considered good enough to start for a top quality EPL team.
Lagerback is the first adequately-qualified coach we have had in the modern era, yet has had too little time to do his job to maximum effect.
But we will NEVER achieve as long as the NFF uses World Cup preparation as a vote-winning device for their own re-election rather than actually preparing the team.
We knew nothing more about Amodu when he was re-assigned at the end of January 2010 than we did before the Ireland game last summer. Our new coach could have gone into the World Cup with a team which had played Ireland, France and two extra friendlies plus the final four World Cup qualifiers and the six games at the Nations Cup, plus the three friendlies Lagerback had, and then prepared at altitude. We could have had a team which had played 17 matches under its coach and was altitude-acclimatised, but thanks to the NFF Lagerback leads a team which had had 3 games under him and no altitude preparation.
