Manchester United - News, Developments & Season
Re: Manchester United - News, Developments & Season
Oloye - Man Utd currently has a surplus of CMs (despite releasing or selling 5 CMs in the summer!). After shelling out 60 million on a 30yo CM, I cannot see the club sanctioning more sales in that position in the near future. I have been saying for years that Man Utd needs a deep lying, ball playing regista to replace the Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes sized holes 🕳 in their midfield. Eriksen does the ball playing part, but a balding 30yo with a pacemaker, and who nearly died last year, cannot be expected to do the dirty work and also be a workaholic midfield presser and destroyer.
In defence they could have bought Pau Torres (a left footed, tall, and elegant Spanish international CD) but let ETH talk them into abandoning his purchase, to instead buy a 5’7 tall player to play CD in a league full of 6’4 frekazoid physical specimens and in which aerial combat is an art form. They also released the only defender in the squad with electric pace - AND who was the most physical defender at the club.
The decision to sell James Garner (after being a standout star while on loan during Notts Forest’s promotion campaign) was also puzzling. Made even more bizarre by the fact that Garner showed he can hang with EPL competition by standing out during Forest’s FA Cup matches against EPL teams such as Arsenal. Surely the natural progression in a team lacking quality CMs should have been to slowly integrate him into the first team, or send him on loan again to get more experience?
Some head scratching decisions at Man Utd (again!).

Re: Manchester United - News, Developments & Season
Casemiro had an absolutely shocking EPL debut against Everton. He was so bad that he looked more like a teenager making his debut than a 5 time Champions League winner.
The drop-off in quality from the Arsenal v Liverpool game to the Everton v Man Utd game was massive. Hard to believe that all 4 teams play in the same division.
Man Utd is very vulnerable to high balls. When Everton hit high crosses into the box, Utd's tiny defenders (led by our 5'7 CD) reacted as if Everton were firing RPGs into the box!

How tall was Canavaro? This thing is all about talent. Hight if over rated. Good players know where she when to anticipate the ball. If it were left to some, the likes of Xavi and Iniesta would never saw playing time because they were short. Ironically, our short defender has already won player of the month. 5'9...and your point is?
Cannavaro (one of only 3 defenders to win the Ballon D'or in its 66 year history) is regarded as an all time great - precisely because he was an utter outlier and defied the laws of the game by being that rarest of things: a CD under 6 feet tall. Cannavaro HAD to be utterly brilliant at everything else: lightning quick, a relentless man marker, aggressive tackler, ferocious competitor, and have cerebral positioning - all in order to compensate for his lack of size. Let us look at his peers and the other CDs he played with: Nesta, Maldini, Costacurta, Materazzi, Ferrara, Lucio, Walter Samuel, Blanc, Thuram, Desailly, Vidic, Ferdinand, Terry...all of them were strapping 6-6'5 monsters. Do you think it is a coincidence that no team has won the EPL, World Cup, or the Champions League with a 5'7 CD?
Or are you suggesting that Lisandro Martinez is the second coming of Cannavaro?
The fact that you brought Xavi and Iniesta (two midfield playmakers) into a discussion about CDs - is not a good sign.
Oh, and his name is "Fabio Cannavaro" (two "n"s). You are also right - “hight” is overrated.

After the win against Liverpool at Old Trafford, Erik Ten Hag said there is still a long way to go and a lot of things to work on.
Well understood, United are doing as expected, we don't expect wonders in the coming difficult fixtures.

9 extra points for ManU after the 3 upcoming EPL games.

Rashford could not hit a barn door in the last 2 games. If Haaland or Lewandowski had been presented with the chances Rashford had against Omonia and Newcastle, they would have scored 5-6 goals in those last 2 games.
Ronaldo is a stroppy teenager in a 38yo’s body. Any time he gets subbed off he openly shows his displeasure and walks off the pitch shaking his head, cursing, refusing to shake the manager’s hand, and then continues his tantrum in the stands. He is a PITA and his work product on the field no longer justifies putting up with his monumental ego.

Things are not as it use to be years back, he can't do step overs or dazzle anymore, even his feared free kick misses it's mark by a wider margin.
Right now no reputable club will splash money for him, his only chance at redemption is to do well for Portugal at the world cup. If he/they flop, that's it, retirement will be next.
Re: Manchester United - News, Developments & Season
Mcal - I am surprised that a player as obsessed with records and his legacy as much as Ronaldo, did not take a shed-load of cash to play in China , Saudi Arabia , or the MLS in . He could comfortably “pad” his record with an extra 100 goals in 2 seasons playing in those leagues and make sure that no is likely to surpass his goal scoring record for a few hundred years.

You are right: playing Omonia at Old Trafford and having gilt edged 1 v 1 chances against Omonia’s reserve GK is as hard as playing away at Anfield against the 6 time European champions and 19 time English champions (whose “weak” defence has the best defender in the world and Brazil’s GK - who keeps Ederson out of the Brazil first 11).

Football is not about names. Its hard to play against this small teams like Omonia.wiseone wrote: ↑Wed Oct 19, 2022 7:57 pm You are right: playing Omonia at Old Trafford and having gilt edged 1 v 1 chances against Omonia’s reserve GK is as hard as playing away at Anfield against the 6 time European champions and 19 time English champions (whose “weak” defence has the best defender in the world and Brazil’s GK - who keeps Ederson out of the Brazil first 11).
You are bashing the same Rashofrd that could not score against a small team but has done so against the same liverpool world class defense at Old Trafford .He miss chances against Omonia yet score against ?liverpool at the same old trafford.
