Rashidi Yekini Playing as A Midfielder Against Sporting CP in 1993

I've never seen Yekini in #8 jersey ever. The man was dropping deep, collecting the ball and running with it. He was ditching out passes, running on the wings and everything. Have you ever seen Yekini play in this role before? I thought he was only able to play as a pure #9

Yekini was not a complete forward. Thats not accurate. He was great in many aspects but certainly not complete. He could neither head and did not have much success as a lone striker especially in a low block.

The most complete striker that Nigeria has ever produced is Thomson Usiyan, bar none. Osimhen and Odegbami may be joint tied for third.

Apologies if you did not see him play.

If my memory serves me correctly, he only started to wear the number 9 jersey for Nigeria at AFCON 1994. Up until then he wore 8. I vaguely recall this being in the case in Maroc, Algiers and Senegal. Can’t quite remember in 1984
God bless and keep Nigeria and make his face shine on her undeserving as she may be.

He wore no 8 in Senegal 92 and siasia wore 9 they later switched. I knew Yekini as jersey # 8

This clip is so Yekini!!!

Sometimes his footwork looks clumsy compared to more polished ballers. You are like who is bumbling guy upfront that's missing chances.

But somehow, by the time the match is over, he has had 5 good chances at goal, fluffed 3 sitters, yet scored 2.

So you think yeah, if this bumling oaf can miss 3 and score 2, imagine what a more polished striker can do. So you put polished striker in. yeah he has nice touches and moves and hustles all over the place. They get only half chances and score nothing. So you bring back Yekini. And yup, you guessed he. he misses chances and he scores.

50 years later, that big oaf with the clumsy footwork is still your all-time leading the scorer. I love Yekini. What he had was truly unique.
